GRE Family Gazette

March 17, 2019

Dear GRE Families,

After Springing forward it took us a few days to rebound but we are sure excited Spring is around the corner. It's hard to believe but we are in our final nine weeks of school! Time sure flies when you are having a blast. This week we had Spring pictures. Remember you can search for individual portraits using the code that was sent home on picture day here. If you need assistance, please call HR Imaging at 740-369-4215.

Thank you to all who joined Pastries with Parents this past Thursday and Friday. We welcomed so many families that we ran out of doughnuts! How lucky are we, that we have such supportive and caring families to work with. A huge THANK YOU to PTO for sponsoring this fun event.

We still have more excitement as we head in to Spring Break. This Thursday we will have Art Day. See Mrs. Doran's update below to learn more about this fun filled event. Also on Thursday, our Third graders will have their Recorder Concert from 2:45-3:15. Third graders, please remember to wear blue jeans and a Big Walnut shirt! Finally, Friday we will top off our day with our third round of Eagle Ed. The entire school will spend time Friday participating in hour long sessions they selected. Ask your child what Eagle Ed session they are attending.

Finally, thank you for all your support this school year. These last few weeks between Spring Break and the end of the year are jam packed and can be tricky for kids and adults:) I hope you enjoy your Spring Break with family and friends and we look forward to welcoming you back April 1st!

Here's to a great week full of fun, friends and learning!

A Few Important Reminders:

1. Big Walnut Local Schools will be hosting a screening of the documentary, Screenagers. This event will be held at BWMS on April 11th starting at 6:30 pm. This event is free and all are welcome! Screenagers is a documentary that focuses on the habits that children develop by using their mobile devices. Throughout the film, families are seen dealing with the consequences (often serious) related to excessive screen time or screen time without boundaries. The film focuses on the connection between mental health and how much tech time can impact a child’s development. This documentary also highlights the benefits of finding the balance of screen time and screen- free time and offers some solutions for parents. For a sneak peak of this film, click here.

2. Attention 4th Grade Parents! Any parent interested in being on the Board for the BWI PTO next year please email Carrie Vitale, carrie.vitale@hotmail.com, by March 31st to show your interest!

3. We need your help! Students will be making homemade instruments in music for our next Eagle Ed day. We are looking for the following items:

-small, medium, and large cans (without labels please)
-small plastic pop bottles or water bottles
If you have any of these items at home, please drop them off to the music room before Thursday March 21st. Thank you for your help!!

4. Art Day is right around the corner. This means all 3rd grade students will be playing their recorders in a short concert from 2:45 to 3:15 p.m. Please plan to have your third grader wear blue jeans and Big Walnut shirts for this exciting event!

Specials Spotlight: Art with Mrs. Doran

Did you know that March is Youth Art Month? We had three students from GRE who had their artwork honored at the state level this month and displayed in downtown Columbus! Congrats to Cecilia, Addie & Ellie!

This Thursday is Art Day at GRE! We will have 10 artists from around the state coming to work with our students. Some are performing artists and teach how to do something, while others are visual artists and will teach how to make something. We are very excited for this special day that is made possible by our amazing PTO!

Mark your calendars for GRE’s Annual Art Show & Food Truck Night on Thursday April 25th! Come see a showcase of the wondeful art student have been creating this year, visit the make n take stations, stop by the book fair & skip cooking dinner since there will be food (and dessert) trucks! More information will be coming home soon!

What’s been going on in art...

Full day kindergartners have been learning about animals in art in preparation for their upcoming field trip to the Columbus Museum of Art!

1st graders have finished up looking at the foreground and background of pictures to create a drawing inspired by the book, If the Dinosaurs Came Back. Next up we are focusing on still lifes!

2nd graders read the folk tale, How Honu the Turtle Got It’s Shell, and created their own sea turtle painting. Now they are working on sculpting turtles out of clay!

3rd graders just finished their Egyptian art unit! Students learned about ancient Egypt, created their own Egyptian portrait and then learned how to write their name in hieroglyphs. Many students were glad that we have the alphabet nowadays!

4th graders have been working on hand sewing soft sculpture “Ugly Dolls” based on the original stuffed animals. Many students were impressed to learn about the original artist’s story starting with just one doll, but eventually turned into a multi million dollar company! They have blown me away with their effort and engagement during this project... some even created dolls for their dolls & have sewn some at home for siblings!
