Current and New Student Registration Update!

I know what a busy time of year this is for all of our families, so take a moment to check an important "to-do" off of your list before the busy season of baseball, soccer, and all things summer begins.

All current parents should have received an email from InfoSnap, our online registration (and re-registration) platform. That email contains a unique "snap code" for all of our current families to use in registering students for the 2017-2018 school year. THIS PROCESS MUST BE COMPLETED BEFORE THE START OF THE SCHOOL YEAR in order for your child to be assigned to a class list. If you need help with the process or do not receive an email from InfoSnap, please reach out to our tech department via haugebee@avoca37.org.

Thank you for your help in completing the registration process in a timely manner. It allows us to have a greater sense of our enrollment and to begin considering bus routes for next school year!

Fidget Frenzy - an Update for Parents

Fidgets are everywhere, with the spinners gaining tremendous popularity among our students recently! Many students, teachers, and parents have asked if there is a policy on using the spinner fidgets at Avoca West. Currently there is no ban on the spinner fidgets, but I've shared this general rule of thumb with our students and staff.

  • Fidgets are for focusing. Some students focus better on academics and instruction while their hands are busy -- doodling, spinning, or "playing" with putty.
  • When a fidget distracts a student from learning or the task he/she should be doing, it is a toy. Toys are not allowed to be used or played with during instructional time.

Students are welcome to bring their spinner fidgets to school to play with during recess, but it is left up to a teacher's discretion as to whether or not it is being used to focus in class. Thanks for understanding, and I hope it helps in dialoguing with your child about how much he/she needs one of the spinners! :)

A Push For Kindness - Top Secret Special Event at Avoca West on Friday!!

Shhhhhh!! Something exciting is about to happen at Avoca West!

Tomorrow afternoon, Avoca West will welcome Brian Williams to talk with our students. Brian is a motivational speaker who lights a fire in students about the impact they can have on their world up close and beyond. His visit will go hand in hand with several other kindness efforts we've had at Avoca West this school year -- Caleb White and his Kindness Project, our Random Acts of Kindness Week, and the general efforts to help our children be thoughtful contributors to their community.

Brian has been working with our Helping Hands group, Mrs. Geidner, and Mrs. Karen Azar to build a sense of mystery this week for what's coming tomorrow. The "Kindness Ninjas" work in secret, don't need to be recognized, but can make a big impact on how others feel! Brian Williams's message will resonate with students and staff as we'll all be encouraged to be Kindness Ninjas and spread the positivity around our planet!

Following his visit, students will be given the chance to participate in two efforts at Avoca West.

  • All students will be given a journal to jot down (a list) of 10 things they do for others. Students are certainly more than welcome to complete more than 10, but completing the 10 will make students eligible to receive a t-shirt from Brian and his group.
  • We will be having a shoe drive and shoes will be sent to Africa.

You can learn more about Brian's movement and message by visiting his website, but please ask your child when he/she comes home tomorrow!
