Mission Statement
Hattie's Tips
MicroTeach Info -It has an effect size of 0.88 which is two years of growth in one year!
The idea is that it is a short lesson. It has 4 components. I'm attaching a lesson plan template if you want to use it.
The 15-minute lesson plan should include the following four items:
1. Learning Outcome
What will the students be able to do or know by the end of the lesson?
2. Minds On
The Minds On is the first part of the lesson to get your students cognitively prepared for the task in the next part of the lesson. Students may revisit concepts or strategies related to the learning outcome and provide opportunities for students to activate prior knowledge. This introduction should provide motivation to the students.
3. Action
The Action is the part of the lesson during which students explore and investigate a new concept. Students can work in small groups, in pairs, individually, or as a whole class. When developing your learning activity, keep in mind our overall objective of creating conversations in your classroom.
4. Consolidate and Debrief
How will you know that you have accomplished your learning outcome? The purpose of the Consolidate and Debrief is to connect the concepts to the actions students took during the lesson and consolidate their understanding. What the teacher learns from this discussion will guide the direction of future lessons or activities.
It basically can happen in two ways.
1. You can video yourself and then watch it back to reflect on the lesson. You can even have some of your team watch it back with you to gain suggestions. Hattie recommends you watch it more than once to get over how you sound, look, etc.
2. Have a colleague come do a 10-15 minute observation of your lesson and provide you feedback around whatever you gave them to "look for" in the lesson. Link to Lesson Format for this.
Here is a link to an article about it as well as a video of two colleagues watching a lesson back. http://www.ascd.org/publications/educational_leadership/feb19/vol76/num05/The_Micro-Teaching_Advantage.aspx
