Last Wednesday, September 14th, the EHS Junior Varsity played their second tournament at Burning Tree Golf Course in Desoto. The tournament was a 3 person scramble and EHS had two teams entered with freshman Marleigh Grant, senior Lexi Frost, and sophomore Brette Hayden as one team, and the second team was sophomores Evey Jones, Allison Allison, and Ryan Bretthauer. Team one with Marleigh, Lexi, and Brette competed against a threesome of Turner players and bested that team by three strokes shooting 45 to their 48 during their 9-hole match. Team Two of Evey, Allison, and Ryan tied their match against Gardner-Edgerton with both teams shooting a 54. The JV girls are all improving their games and look forward to the final tournament of their season next Monday and that will be a 2 person scramble to finish the season.
Yesterday, September 19th, the junior varsity girls golf team took part in their third and final tournament of the season at Ottawa as part of a two-person scramble tournament. While all three pairs of girls managed to place in the top 10 at the tournament, sophomores Brette Hayden and Evelyn Jones managed to bring home medals for their 2nd place performance. One shot behind them, senior Elexis Frost and freshman Marleigh Grant missed out on receiving 3rd place medals due to a four-way tie-breaker. Tied with the 7th best score at the tournament, sophomores Allison Allison and Ryan Bretthauer put together a solid round throughout, with Ryan almost finishing the round on the long putts she has managed to wow us with on many occasions.
Brette and Evey managed to find several fairways on their tee shots throughout their round, including on par-5 hole #9, which they made look easy with an approach to the edge of the water, followed by Brette ricocheting a ball off a small boulder by the parking lot in order to stay in bounds. Evey had a couple of drives from the tee box that had their playing partners from Ottawa jealous, managing to avoid tree trouble for most of the round.
Elexis and Marleigh balanced one another's shots well all day. On hole #3, when Marleigh mis-hit a ball that almost hit an Ottawa parent, Lexi followed her up by finding the middle of the fairway. Balancing that out, Marleigh later launched a tee shot well down #5 fairway that found some pampas grass, which both girls managed to work around once they took an unplayable lie penalty.
Allison and Ryan played a solid round throughout, with glimpses of golf genius shown by both of them. Although they are each pretty critical of their play, it shows the level of competitive nature they each exhibit, which will be fun to have on our team in the future. Even when a shot would position them behind a tree, each knew they needed to hit a punch shot out in order to avoid the obstacle and set up a better look at the shot following that one. The strategies and tactics they have picked up this season have proved valuable to them and to other teammates playing with them.
This tournament ended the junior varsity schedule for this girl's golf season. The varsity girl's golf team will next be in action on Wednesday, September 21st, at Paola Country Club for the Spring Hill Invitational.
Varsity Golf - Coach DeVoe
Joellen managed to find several fairways much of her round, but the shift of tee boxes further forward than usual allowed her ball on hole #6 to roll into a ditch, which she played out of despite doing battle with some cattails. Joellen would be critical of her putting throughout her round, but her short game around the green showed the consistency we come to expect from her.
Bree put together a strong round, particularly strong from the tee box on several occasions. She managed to land safely out of tree trouble, while others in her group were doing battle with branches on several occasions.
Olivia played good approach shots to many greens on the day, but may have struggled in getting putts to JUST GO IN and battled with judging the speed of the greens on the course. She continues to be one of the most beloved playing partners on the course, consistently telling her playing partners when they had a good shot or nice putt in true Olivia style.
Brooklyn played a smart round and even when her ball didn't find the fairway, she kept the mindset to make her NEXT SHOT better. Instead of trying to blast a ball through a tree, she found ways to punch a ball back into a fairway to set up a clear look at her next shot to the green. She was consistent on her putts throughout her round and continues to improve on her tee shots.
Abigail started her day with what many would consider a devastating first hole on par-3 hole #7. She managed to get reset and finished on a solid note, particularly that she was the only one in her playing group to find the fairway on her final hole of her round, while her playing partners had to deal with creek beds and chunks of freshly-cut pampas grass. Despite having the biggest audience of any of our players on the day, Abigail managed to easily sail her ball over the water hazard on hole #9 as Ms. Kimberlin got to see (check the tweet HERE). Abigail's determination and grit to finish her round despite a rough start shows more about her than a score on a card will. Proud of her.
The girls varsity squad will next be in action on Wednesday, September 21st, at Paola Country Club for the Spring Hill Invitational Tournament. Admission is free and so is parking. Why not go?

West Franklin
The Lady Cardinals had their first home tri of the season against West Franklin and Wellsville on Tuesday. The girls were excited to play in their home gym with an outstanding student section at their backs. The first match of the night, the Lady Cards got off to a slow start in the first set against West Franklin. We struggled early in serve receive and attacked most of the balls out of system. The girls rallied towards the end of the set but fell short 23-25. In the second set of the match, we traded points with the Falcons early. We hit our stride offensively about 15 points in. Sophomore Addie Hemphill and senior Josie Pickett took care of the ball offensively at the net. While junior Rayah Foltz served aggressively and made smart attacking decisions from the back row that resulted in a handful of kills. Starting the 3rd set, junior Parker Long served aggressively and the Cards scored the first 7 points of the set. Middles senior Sawyer Schreiner and junior Harper Andrews put up several key blocks to stop the Falcon offense at the net, while senior Audrey Shain and Parker Long dug up several balls in the backcourt. We finished the best of a three-set match 2-1. Scores 23-25, 28-26, 25-14.Wellsville
The Lady Cards wrapped up their night with a big win over Wellsville. The girls' engines were running full speed and dominated the offensive / defensive side of the net. Both Parker Long and junior Ellie Suber had two big serving runs and racked up a handful of aces. Our attackers at the net had several great kills. Finishing the match for us was Sawyer Schreiner with a big swing out of the middle for a kill. Scores for the match were 25-10, 25-12.

The 9th-grade volleyball team had a busy week with three playing dates. The girls did a nice job of competing as they went 7-0 for the week. Last Tuesday, they defeated Paola 25-15, 25-23 in league competition. Karis Mason had a breakout performance as she was an aggressive attacker throughout the night. On Thursday, we traveled to Ottawa to play the Cyclones and Wellsville. The girls defeated Ottawa, 25-7, 25-22, and Wellsville, 25-16, 25-18. Our setting was solid all night led by Arianna Etter and Lianna Mueting. Adria Chrislip also had a high hitting percentage in both wins. Bailey Hammerschmidt was a tough server all night by hitting key spots with her serve. Finally, on Saturday we went to Saint Thomas Aquinas for a tournament. The girls finished 4-0. On the day they defeated BVNW, 25-20, 25-17, St. Thomas Aquinas, 25-13, 25-23, Tonganoxie, 25-18, 25-17, and Blue Valley, 25-12, 25-16. Our middles, Avery Warren and Madisen Spring were good all day both offensively and defensively. Our backrow trio of Halle Hammes, Kennedy Stadalman, and Shyanne Hall were very consistent in all 4 matches. The girls will play at home on Tuesday against Baldwin at 4:30.

It may have taken 5 games to get a Dub and to score but it finally happened. I don't know about all the fans and the players but when senior Parker Hurla found junior Derek Lahmann for a tap-in goal, it felt like a huge weight was lifted. Finally getting that first one was huge for us. During the first half, we dominated play and had several really good chances to put balls away. Their keeper is a very good shot stopper. We had a few shots that I thought were goals and he made great saves on. Against a lot of other keepers we are would have been up 4-0 at the half and feeling a lot better about ourselves. We did a lot of good things we just didn't finish. But we do have to play smarter than we did, and we will get there. The second half was much of the same. We dominated possession and the game. Sophomore Nate Steinlage had to make one save. We held them to one shot total and we recorded 25+.
We finally made it 2-0 when junior Ayden Rameriz headed the ball to Derek Lehmann. Derek touched forward and pulled the keeper out and took the shot. His shot hit the crossbar but Isaac followed in and headed the ball off the keeper's hands and into the net. Derek got his brace when he went on a 60-yard dribble and when he tried to cross the ball, the defender deflected the ball back to him and Derek shot and scored. Yes, we controlled the game but there are a lot of things we could have done better. We still have a long way to go to clean things up and play the way we are capable of playing.
Basehor
For the first 30 minutes of the game, I thought we played as individuals instead of as a team. We were more worried about the name on the back of the jersey than the front. I had had enough so I made the move and subbed out all of our starters and brought 10 guys off the bench. At this point, the game changed. These guys played together in the attack and in defense and all of a sudden we went from being on our heels to on the front foot. These boys brought more energy and effort than what was shown in the first 30 minutes of play. At half, we had a chat and we started the guys that finished the first half in the second half. They continued to play well. After 5 or so minutes I subbed on the starters and they picked up where the other guys left off and picked up their game even more. The last ten and the second half is the effort and playing for each other that we expect from the boys. We got down 0-1 with about 18 left. We got it tied in the second half when junior Christian Koehn played a great ball in the box from around half field. Parker got on the end of it and headed it in to tie it. We had several chances to go up 2-1 but just found the net. Nate had 14 saves 4 of which were great saves. The defense played fairly well after the first 30 minutes. We got to OT but lost 1-2 on a questionable PK. We told the boys after the game that if we can match that effort and play for each other every time out. We will be extremely tough to beat!
We have Baldwin at home on Tuesday. JV kicks off at 430 with Varsity to follow. We will have some soccer campers on the sideline during introductions as well as our new burgundy kits!!

@Paola
A shortened match against a shorthanded Paola team resulted in the first win of the season for the boys with a 1-0 result. The game started very nicely for us as we immediately looked to play wide to Freshman Jason Ditty who played a pearl of a cross to a waiting Freshman Henry Pratt but couldn’t quite keep the composure needed to put away the shot. We had a few more opportunities very early on, but for some reason, there was a huge drop-off in our quality. We stopped looking wide, played into pressure, and weren’t making the necessary movements to get into open spaces. This tends to happen and teams will play down to the level of the opponents which is no offense to Paola, but we played down to their level unfortunately which is probably more likely with a group of younger players that we have. We were still able to combine to find a goal in the first 20 minutes as Ditty found the back of the net. The second half brought more woes for our boys as we continued to struggle to play through Paola’s packed defense. They were able to threaten, resulting in a penalty called on Freshman Cameron Koehn who in a last ditch effort stopped the player in their tracks which was looking like a clear shot on goal. Freshman Sawyer Harding came up big in goal saving the penalty while the follow-up was put wide by a Paola player. Wasn’t the game we were expecting, but congratulations to the boys for the first win of the season.
Basehor
The boys came out and competed their tails off against 5A Basehor in the scorching sun resulting in a 2-0 win for the good guys. There were times when we were pinned into our half, but not under any real pressure in the first half as they had the wind and any ball kicked in the air sailed a bit further into our half. We tried to do something new and put Freshman center back Cameron Koehn at striker as he has been chomping at the bit to play up top, and although he did well up there holding up play, his spot is center back where he held firm the rest of the game. Freshmen Austin Moffit and Hawken Andrews also played excellent games yesterday, going into tackles strongly and quickly getting the ball off their feet to relieve pressure off our backline. Our midfield was connected, for the most part, looking for and finding passes quickly allowing us to get up the field. We created some good chances in the first including a 1v1 opportunity from Sophomore Mason Harding which was saved by the keeper. Our first goal came off a corner put in by Mason which took some friendly bounces in the box and Freshman Lincoln Hurla was able to smash it home with his left boot. We looked to push the initiative and halftime had us in very high spirits. At halftime, the talk was simple. Minus a few minor adjustments, keep doing what you’re doing because Basehor is only doing one thing and they have not been effective at all. In a couple of scary moments, center backs were able to track down the runner without fouling and take it back the other way which continued in the second half when Cameron Koehn tracked down their speedster from behind. The second half saw us control the game a little more as we had our wind at our backs. Freshman Sawyer Harding made a few more good saves which is good to see his confidence build every game. There were some wing plays that gave us open looks but couldn’t quite capitalize on them until Cameron Daniels hit a bomb from the 30-yard line and the keeper could do nothing but watch it sail over his head into the goal. Again, everyone who stepped onto the field gave it their all and no matter who was on, I didn’t feel like we were either losing any sort of playmaking ability or energy which is awesome to see from top to bottom. A couple of moments of miscommunication almost gave them some easy goals, but our recovery in this match was great. To put it in a little perspective, last year's team lost this game 4-0 so these guys are really excelling and improving week in and week out. We go again against our arch nemesis Baldwin at 4:30 PM on a much cooler afternoon followed by the Varsity.

Comments:
The girls had a great showing today in the large schools division. The race featured about 100 more athletes and 13 more teams than last year so our placings are a little lower as individuals, but our over-team performance and times we ran were great. Every school that placed ahead of us was significantly larger in enrollment than us and we were the top team from Kansas in the field as well. After today, it is safe to say that the girls are rounding into form. Compared to a year ago, our 1-5 average time is a couple of seconds faster today than it was with last year’s state title-winning team. Last year’s team had a depth advantage over this year’s team, however, this year’s team has many younger/newer runners on the team. In fact, entering the season, only 4 of the 10 varsity runners today had varsity racing experience entering the year. Leading the way was sophomore Hanna Keltner with a great season improvement as well as improving over her time on this course from last year. Hanna was our only medal winner finishing in the top 25. Nearly all the girls ran season best times today with Addison Metcalf, Marta Di Lauro, and Ava Dines also running personal best times. Senior Abby Keltner ran an inspired race today running a season biggest season improvement today. Although this was Abby’s final race this season, her leadership this season will continue to be with the team as she will now work from the sidelines as she recovers from her injury. Her absence opens the need for another girl to fill a varsity spot. Marta Di Lauro, Ava Dines, and London Scholz have all come on as challengers for that #7 spot on the varsity team, and their continued hard work will certainly shore up that spot on the team.

The boys took a big step in right direction today. Compared to last week where only 3 boys ran under 20 minutes, today we had 7 boys run under 20 minutes in tougher conditions considering the heat we raced in today. Like the girls team, we have only 4 runners of the 9 who ran varsity today that were varsity runners a year ago. We have great leadership at the top and a team of athletes who all want to work hard and reach our potential, and that is a great combination to have. The boys raced in the small schools varsity division today (which by school size is where we should be) and finished mid-pack, but if you look at the team points we could have very easily finished as high as 7th with just a few position changes at the finish. We were led today again by junior Zach Arnold who matched his exact time on this course from a year ago, but did finish higher. Zach has improved time every race this season so far and is on a great trajectory right now. Where this team can get better, and I believe will get better, is in our pack of runners in the 4-9 spot. Aiden Mack, Austin Moffitt, Wesley Borger, and Noah VanFoeken rounded out our varsity points today and were separated by only 10 seconds. Yet, they didn’t really race together. That is something we will look to improve on and should be able to move them up the field together as a pack and improve that position in our scoring. Not to mention, Jackson Dines and Nate VanFoeken are right there with them. We will add back into the mix returning varsity runner from 2021 Ethan Gales next week who will come back from an illness which should add some more depth to the mix. The boys team is solid at the top and today looks to be improving through the middle and back end of the varsity; something that makes me excited to see where the boys will go from here.

The JV races at Missouri Southern are only 3k in length, so that explains the times. Because of that, I can’t mark anything as season best times. Racing only 3K though was definitely a challenge still because when the JV teams finally get to race it’s after 1:00 and we are at the hottest part of the day. The girls JV group has 5 of the 9 girls in their first year of running cross country. They are continuing to improve and figure out how to race week after week. The biggest mover on the day today was freshman Maria Sagrero who finished ahead of 4 of her teammates today who beat her a week ago. After starting with some distance races last spring in track, Maria is learning how to race farther and will continue to get faster as she gets smarter about racing. The story of the race though has to be senior Ava Heide. Ava has the heart of a champion and it was on full display today. After being diagnosed with Leukemia about four months ago, Ava has been battling every day and had a goal this season of running a race her senior year. Ava was an inspiration for all today. She had a great cheering section and didn’t let anyone down. She never walked during the race and never gave up. If she can do this race today, I know she can do anything. We are all so proud of Ava and all the hard work she put into accomplishing this goal.

The JV boys also ran a 3K in the last (and hottest) race of the day. Running some of the JV in the varsity race, we didn’t have enough boys to make a team for the race, but we were still able to compete and race hard. Sophomore Charlie Martin ran this 3K race a year ago and today ran it 30 seconds faster than a year ago. Another Sophomore Andrew Lord ran a time today that would have put him on pace to run a season-best time and personal best had he been on this pace for a 5K race. All the JV runners today will get back to the full race distance next week, and the schedule will flip so they race first during the coolest part of the day for their next race. Looking forward to seeing how they can race in much better conditions.

The team will be much closer to home at the Rim Rock Classic in Lawrence, KS next Saturday. This is another very large regional cross country meet with multiple varsity divisions based primarily on school size. It’ll be another great opportunity to race fast alongside great competition.

The Cardinals traveled to Spring Hill for a great week 3 Frontier League match-up. Spring Hill was coming off a tough loss to Tonganoxie last Friday and off an 8-2 season during the 2021 campaign. Eudora’s defense got an early 3 and out and this led to a 5-yard Kole Manley (Jr) TD. The defense would get another 3 and out and this led to a safety with the punt return team. The safety was credited to Christian Jarrett (Soph). Eudora’s offense would get right back to work and score on an Octavius Lyles run, making the score 16-0. Spring Hill's offense would eventually get going, but only to be stopped inside field goal range, which led to 3 points for the Broncos. Eudora would score 3 times in the 2nd quarter and put the game out of reach. Scores from Kole Manley (Jr) to Braylen Hoobler (Jr) for 13 yards, a Matt Magette (Jr) 35-yard run, and a Kole Manley (Jr) to Adrion Seals (Jr) touchdown made the halftime score 37-3.
After the half, Eudora would try to run the clock and keep possession of the football. Coach Steffen was really pleased with the effort in the 2nd half while trying to manage the clock and keep everyone healthy. The Cards defensive line was very impressive on Friday. This group led by seniors Jaden Hamm, Jaiden Bender, Micah Barron, Kevin Whitten, and junior Owen Wilks had a total of 26 tackles on the night. Spring Hill would score in the 4th quarter to make the final 37-10. Eudora improves their record to 3-0 on the season and will travel to Ottawa for another Frontier League matchup, before returning home for 3 games in a row. After 2 weeks Eudora's offense is number 1 in both scoring and rushing. Their defense is ranked 1st in scoring defense and also total yards allowed.
