Fidel Alejandro Castro Ruz

In Office January 1, 1959 until April 19, 2011

How was Fidel Castro able to established the first communist state in the Western Hemisphere after leading an overthrow of the military dictatorship of Fulgencio Batista in 1959?

A little bit about fidel castro...

He was born August 13, 1926 he was the illegitimate son of a wealthy farmer. The youngest of three, Castro's parents werent planning on sending their young son to school, but he was so set on getting an education that he was able to cinvince them to let him go at age 6. His teachers described him as a motivated student who did well in spanish, history, and agriculture. On top of it all he was good at athletics. In 1945 Castro studied law at the University of Havana. At the Unversity student activism, violence, and gang fights happened often. Castro eventually joined the activists and joined one of these gangs. Castro made a pretty good reputation for himself. His personal ambition and public speaking ability stood out about him, with these traits he would do big things.

Revolution to Power

Studying Law at the University of Havan he picked up his leftist Anti-Imperialism Politics. With these he would join a rebelion and it was a long road to power. He organized a group of followers and on July 26, 1953, and he attacked Batista's government. Castro was captured, tried, and sentenced to fifteen years in prison. In 1955 he was pardoned and released, but was forced to go to Mexico City, Mexico. From there he would organize an expedition against Batista called the 26th of July Movement. On December 2, 1956, Castro and eighty other men fought in which all but 12 men were killed or captured. Castro fled to the mountains in which he would then begin a guerrilla operation, where a small band of revolutionaries would attempt to remove Batista. Castro led his ment to victory, his guerrillas increased their control over rural areas and on April 9, 1958, Castro called a national strike. Later it was called off after Batista ordered strikers to be shot on sight, causing massive shootings. Inocent bystanders were fatalities of Batista's governement, for they were thought to be part of Casto's Guerilla Operation. Batista lost power within his military and began to recieve a lot less political backup from the people. On January 1, 1959, Castro and his July 26th Movement he was able to assume power.

“It’s not about making money, it’s to make sure that it is used properly" -Fidel Castro

Castro and the U.S

In April 1961 exiles (sent out of Cuba by Casto), supported by the United States under John F. Kennedy, attempted an invasion of Cuba at the Bay of Pigs. The invasion failed. In December 1961 Castro merged all groups that had fought against Batista into the Integrated Revolutionary Organizations. In 1965 it became the Communist Party of Cuba the island's only ruling party. In foreign affairs Castro sort of sided with the Soviet Union. In October 1962 the Cuban Missile Crisis occured, where the United States faced off with the communist powers over the presence of Soviet-owned nuclear arms in Cuba. When President Kennedy avoided confrontation and directly negotiated the missiles' removal out of Cuba.

Castro's Government

Castro's leftist Anti-Imperialism Politics lead him to side with the soviets and become more of a communism state. With the collapse of the Soviet Union in the early 1990s, Castro found it hard to tread water. He was not able to have Soviet money pump into his economy anymore, so he began to look at other ways to keep his country going. He then looked to the U.S to lift their embargo on Cuba. The U.S would only lift the embargo if Castro chaged his governement, and so the Embargo still sits. He was really ruthless when he had Soviet money backing him, he really has no leg to stand on at this point. We should either see a governenment change for Cuba, or an overthrow and a new leader.
Fidel Castro in his own words
In this video, it shows Castro revolting against Cuba's Imperialist government. He goes into how the Government does not support the people, that the people have two choices: one to suffer through poverty, and terrible living condiones or Two fight. He beleives that there needs to be a new government to support the people. The peasants and the working class need to stand up and fight so they can fight and put a new government in place. He does not go into a specific governemnt, he talks about how other countries are failing because of Imperialism. It shows that he wants to help people, also shows he is the politics of other countries which is good traits for a dictatorship.

Letter to Castro

Dear Fidel Castro,

I think you have done many great things for Cuba, you fought for the people and helped the economy. I believe it is time to chnge your government, it was smart to side with soviets. As of right now they cant support you, your neighbor the U.S is the only country left and they want to help you. In order for this to happen they expect you to shift your governemnt to a democratic one. This way your country gets the Embargo removed and you can save the country from poverty and horrible living conditions for the people like you did before. If you decide to leave your country as is, In fear you will be romeved out of power if a new government is put in place then that doesnt make you any better then Batista. All that you fought for will be a waist. I hope you make the right decision.

Sincerly,

Steve
