Students Investigate Soil Samples
At Half Day School, fourth-graders are learning about what makes up soil in different regions, how physical and chemical weathering of rock takes place, and how erosion and deposition lead to new land formations. They are also learning about how fossil evidence can show us how the earth can change drastically over time.
This study of the earth systems is part of a fall unit on soils and weathering that students study in science. During science time, students are expected to demonstrate grade-appropriate proficiency in asking questions, developing and using models, planning and carrying out investigations, analyzing and interpreting data, constructing explanations and designing solutions, engaging in argument from evidence, and obtaining, evaluating, and communicating information. Students are expected to use these practices to demonstrate an understanding of the core ideas.
The study of soil and weathering is part of the Next Generation Science Standards (NGSS). Standards set the expectations for what students should know and be able to do. The NGSS were developed by states to improve science education for all students.

Help Prevent the Spread of Illness
To help prevent the spread of illness, we would like to provide you with some sick day guidelines to help with your decision on whether or not to send your child to school. Please contact the school office in the following manner if your child presents with any of the following symptoms described in this Sick Day Guidelines sheet.
To report an absence please call 847-634-1484 or email Hd_attendance@d103.org. Provide your child’s first and last name, child’s advisory teacher, and a list of detailed symptoms.
Students MUST stay home with any of the following symptoms per the Illinois Department of Public Health guidance:
fever (100.4F or higher)
new onset of moderate to severe headache
shortness of breath
new cough
sore throat
vomiting
diarrhea
change or loss in sense of taste or smell
fatigue from an unknown cause
muscle or body aches from an unknown cause
At this time if an individual is experiencing any of these symptoms, the student will need a negative COVID diagnostic test (home test kits not allowed) to return, or a 10 day quarantine from onset of symptoms, regardless of vaccination status.
Further, in line with our usual sick guidelines, a student may not return to school, regardless of a negative COVID test until they have improved symptoms and have been free of fever, vomiting, and diarrhea for 24 hours without the use of medication.
Masks & Water Bottles Requested
Masks: Please send your student to school with extra child-sized masks. One of the most important mitigation strategies is a good mask that fits properly. This CDC graphic provides information on the proper type and way to wear a mask. Please be sure that the mask covers the nose and mouth, is 2-3 layers, and does not have valves. Gaiters are not approved face coverings.
Water Bottles: Please send your student to school with a water bottle labeled with their name for use during the day.
