Principal's Message
Last week I had the great fortune to attend the Deeper Learning Conference at High Tech High in San Diego. It was truly one of the most amazing educational conferences I have ever attended. From the opening session with Speech from Arrested Development, Dr. Chris Emdin from Columbia University, and Derek Luke from 13 Reasons Why to Deep Dive conversations with Ted Dintersmith from Stanford University, there was so much energy and passion for innovation in education. The most moving and inspirational presentation of the conference, however, came from a panel of students who shared their exhibitions of learning. This panel included an entrepreneur, an engineer, an aspiring political leader, and two musicians. Hearing these students talk about the deeper learning they have experienced thanks to schools where they were able to apply what they were learning and teachers who pushed them beyond the standard curriculum was amazing. Throughout their presentation, I imagined the faces of LHS students on the stage one day giving similar information. Innovation and passion for learning are the cornerstones of our vision for LHS. I can't wait to go back to the DL conference next year with a team of teachers as we continue on this journey!
I Make a Difference
From Margaret Burgess
I would like to thank Terri for recognizing me for the I Make a Difference Award. I would like to pass this award along to someone I think has made an immediate impact since she started here. She stepped into her position at a very busy time and has come in with a great attitude and a great work ethic and I am happy to have her here. Diana McAndrews YOU Make a Difference! I look forward to working with her and making a difference for years to come. Congratulations Diana and welcome to the Landstown High School family.

Security Concerns: Our security staff reports that there are a lot of students being released out of their classrooms--especially the ASB classrooms and especially during 4th block. Students may be asking to go to the Library, or restrooms; however, they are meeting up, not going to where they are supposed to be etc. STUDENTS SHOULD BE IN CLASSROOMS. An Eagle in Need
Start Preparing for Next School Year with Schoology PL On Your Own Time and At Your Own Pace
Are you ready to start using Schoology with all of your classes next school year? While many of you have already made the leap from Google Classroom to Schoology this school year, as a school and a division, we will all be making that leap beginning in the 2019-2020 school year.
To help prepare you for this transition, Krissy and Erik have created Schoology Learning Boards full of tutorials and resources on a plethora of features that you will likely use within Schoology. They have created three boards that align with the categories established by the VBCPS Navigational Markers: Toes in the Water, Waist-High, and All In, terms used to depict comfort levels with Schoology.
Between now and May 31, you should review all three learning boards, beginning with the Toes in the Water board. When you feel comfortable with all of the features on this learning board, you should complete the required exit ticket reflection to earn 2 PL points and also gain access to the next learning board. Then, repeat that process, working through the next level boards completing each required exit ticket when you are comfortable with the features. You can earn up to 6 PL points, 2 per learning board. Please be honest about your abilities and in your reflection, as this will help us to create more effective Schoology training that meets everyone where they are and provide the support needed to make this transition. If you have any questions, get in touch with Krissy, Erik or one of our stellar Schoology Champions.
Please join us in the Schola for Spring into College: Junior Day hosted by ACCESS and LHS Counselors on Wednesday, April 3rd during One Lunch. There will be a panel discussion and meet and greet with VA college admissions reps (VWU, Regent, ODU, CNU, and VCU), FAFSA and financial aid information, and NCAA Eligibility explained. Encourage ALL juniors to attend!
Workplace Readiness Skills assessment will be given on April 2, 3, and 4th in the Library. Seniors who have not yet earned their required Industry credential for graduation may be involved in this testing.
Counselors will be in classrooms this week working on Academic and Career Plans through 10th grade Health/PE classes. Looking forward to exploring careers and making BIG plans with our LHS sophomores!
Mrs. Cariello will be visiting classrooms early in the week to discuss Dual Enrollment English for rising Seniors. If juniors need more information or would like to complete an application for this program, please direct them to Mrs. Cariello or the Counseling office. Many thanks!
Newport News Shipbuilding - 2019 Teacher Internship/Professional Development
Newport News Shipbuilding will offer a two-week paid internship to a limited number of middle and high school STEM (Science, Technology, Engineering and Math) teachers, professional school counselors and community college instructors from Hampton Roads area. Selected candidates will spend two consecutive work weeks this summer as employees of Newport News Shipbuilding; working inside the shipyard, learning how they build and design our nation’s nuclear aircraft carriers and nuclear submarines. The goal is to educate local teaching professionals on the myriad of shipyard career opportunities and career paths available to their students.
Candidates that are initially selected will be contacted by a Newport News Shipbuilding talent acquisitions representative to schedule an interview before the final selections are made. If selected as an intern, candidates must successfully pass a pre-employment hair follicle drug test and physical, as well as a criminal background check. This is a paid internship program, however benefits are not provided. A limited amount of openings are available. Selected candidates will work at Newport News Shipbuilding 40-hours per week for two consecutive work week, July 8-19, 2019. Candidates must be available to work every day (Monday - Friday) from 7:00 a.m. – 3:30 p.m for the two week session. The deadline to apply is April 12.
Online LHS Book Study Opportunity
Who loves Google and infusing it in the classroom in ways that bring your content to life for your students? If you said, “ME!!” this online book study of The Google Infused Classroom: A Guidebook to Making Thinking Visible and Amplifying Student Voice, which examines pedagogy and how Google tools can enhance it, may be just for YOU! We will begin our book study on April 2 via online discussions in Schoology. Space is limited as we only have hard copies of the book to distribute, so the first 23 to register are in! If you are interested in participating and earning a possible 6 PL points, please complete this form. See Krissy or Erik with questions.
Professional Learning Program
As part of the division's PL program, instructional staff, including teachers, counselors, and specialists, engage in both essential (required) and choice professional learning sessions. In previous years, the majority of sessions for the upcoming school year were released for registration at the same time during the first week of May. Now the publication of choice sessions can be ongoing, released for registration throughout the year to allow staff to better make decisions based on their schedule and needs at that time, rather than registering for sessions months in advance. Essential sessions, however, will continue to be published with an official launch date of May 2. Please remember:
- Publication of choice sessions will occur throughout the year in Frontline.
- All Essential sessions will be published and opened for registration in Frontline May 2.
- It is vital that profiles in Frontline be set to accurately reflect the current teaching assignment and to allow notifications. This ensures that as relevant sessions are added, an email notification will be sent. You can find instructions on setting up your profile here.
