LLCS Students Work With Local Artist Gary Pierce
Local woodworking artist, Gary Pierce, recently spent the afternoon at Long Lake Central School, with Technology Education teacher, Mrs. Cynthia Brownell, and her students, demonstrating the proper techniques for using the wood lathe. Students in grades 9-12 participated in the demonstration. Mr. Pierce showed the students tools he uses on a daily basis, as well as explained the process of creating wood bowls from harvesting to turning a rough bowl on the lathe, and the drying process that is required. Mr. Pierce also discussed the business perspective of his artwork, and the student were interested in learning how he figures out pricing.
The second half of the demonstration, Mr. Pierce took a small block of wood and showed the students the proper way of holding and using the lathe tools. When he completed the turning, the students were fascinated with the small Christmas tree he had created.
After the demonstration, the students spent a week turning wood blocks to create one-of-a-kind hand-turned pens.
