What We're Learning in 6th Grade Language Arts
Good-bye to the Moon
This week's story, Good-bye to the Moon, is a science fiction one. Kepler Masterman is taking a trip from his home on the moon to the strange environment of Earth. He misses his friends, and the trip is a bit strange. However, when he lands he is excited to explore Earth. This story presents wonderful opportunities for comparing and contrasting.
Figurative Language
Sixth graders are getting very well-versed with figurative language such as metaphors, similes, idioms, and hyperbole. Ask your child to give you an example of each. Similarly, they are becoming masterminds at finding homophones, homographs, synonyms, and antonyms in our daily morning message. I am convinced that we could teach/learn off of this one daily piece of text all day long.
Leveled Reading One of our weekly rotating groups is partner reading the leveled reader that corresponds to our story. This one has a social studies connection about the importance of learning about our past. | Partner Reading the Weekly Story Loaded with text features, these students are taking in some interesting text in our story of the week about petroglyphs. | MCS Character Trait of the Month Once again, students have been working hard in the computer lab with Mrs. Duritsch. Check out the newest display of compassion examples. |
