Connecting Communities: A forum on the relationship between Temple University and North Philadelphia
Today, November 4, 2019 at 6pm in Morgan Hall D301, The Temple University 2019 Vira I. Heinz Women in Global Leadership (VIH) Cohort will be hosting Connecting Communities: A forum on the relationship between Temple University and North Philadelphia. The event will be a panel consisting of staff, students and community members followed by round table discussion about the climate of Temple University and the Philadelphia Community. Dinner will be served. The Temple VIH Cohort traveled to four countries during the Summer of 2019, students interested in studying abroad will have the opportunity to hear the experiences of other students and form connections. One thing that the 2019 Cohort noticed abroad was the strong sense of community and camaraderie that existed between all people in a given area; this is something we are acutely aware of amid ongoing discussions about the relationship between Temple students and our North Philadelphia neighbors. We hope that you will join us for this event.

Mental Health in the Age of Mass Incarceration
The objectives of the workshops are to 1) provide a general understanding of the emotional and physical impacts of trauma, 2) explore trauma-responsive approaches that could be applied to the criminal justice system, and 3) challenge the participants to envision a system the addresses the needs of all community members.
Over the two days will facilitate ice breakers, brain-storming and question-storming sessions, activities that prompt reflection, and present relevant information to the group that is informational and prompts additional conversation. The first part of the talk will be on Monday, November 18th at 6:30pm in Anderson 102. The second talk will on Wednesday, November 20th at 6:30pm in Tuttleman 300AB. We will provide real case scenarios to the group and ask them to identify systemic issues, alternatives to incarceration, and the resulting outcomes that can be achieved with a new approach. Understanding the heaviness of the material and the impact it could have on the group, we have also included grounding activities and "dumping" circles.
