Laptops in Leiden City
Leiden, English Leyden, gemeente (municipality) located in the western Netherlands. It lies near the confluence of the Oude Rijn and Nieuwe Rijn (Old Rhine and New Rhine) rivers, 10 miles (16 km) northeast of The Hague and 5 miles (8 kilometers) further inland from the North Sea.
William I (the Silent), Prince of Orange established the University of Leiden in 1575 to reward citizens bravery during the battle. The 17th and 18th centuries, the university was a hub for Dutch Reformed science and medicine. It hosted scholars such as Hugo Grotius Scaliger and Jacobus Arminius, Daniel Heinsius and Franciscus (Frans), Hemsterhuis, Hermann Boerhaave. The institutions that are part of the university comprise the Royal Institute of Linguistics and Anthropology and the National Museum of Antiquities, the National Museum of Ethnology of Asia as well as the Museum of the History of Science, as well as the botanical gardens (1587) and the observatory. Many famous painters were born in Leiden and include Jan van Goyen and Jan Steen, Gabriel Metsu and Gerard Dou. These painters made Leiden the epicenter of the Dutch artistic Renaissance during the 17th century.
Leiden experienced economic stagnation after the demise of the textile industry in the 18th century. Then came industrialization in the latter part of the 19th century. The city's main economic activities today encompass art of drawing, the production of building materials, and food processing. Leiden's markets for cattle and cheese are among the biggest in the country and there are numerous bulb-growing farms to the west. The beaches of Noordwijk, Katwijk and Katwijk are close by. The residential areas that surround them are witness to a great deal of developments from World War II but the center of the city's life is still the town's old part.
