What a great year!
As we quickly approach the end of our year at Haymarket Elementary, we would like to take this opportunity to thank you for a very successful year. It’s been a pleasure working with all the students, staff and families to make this year a success. There are many things to celebrate as the school year concludes. We have enjoyed many PTO family events, watched our students perform awesome musical concerts, enjoyed Field Day today, experience a wonderful Elf, Jr. play in December, welcomed Humphrey the hamster to the HMES after our One School, One Book program, enjoyed a wide variety of before and after school clubs and so much more! Our teachers have worked extra hard this year and our students continue to amaze us with their positive attitudes and enthusiasm for learning. Please know that this summer we will be hard at work planning for the 2019-2020 school year. We look forward to planning a year focused on continuous improvement, student engagement and strengthening community partnerships!
Enjoy the summer with your families and we look forward to seeing you in August.

Placement Input Reminder (for 2019-2020)
Time for a Story
1. Read regularly - Try to read to your child every day. You might aim for 15-20 minutes of bedtime reading for a peaceful end of the day. Bring along a book and read to him/her during a sibling's sports practice. Or curl up together with a book when you get home from work!
2. Take turns choosing books - Your youngster may want to hear old favorites again and again...this builds fluency! Use your turn for new titles and variety, such as nonfiction or poetry.
3. Let him/her participate - Ask your child to turn the pages while you read. Also, he/she can finish sentences that rhyme or fill in words he/she knows. Go slowly so he/she has time to understand the story and look at the illustrations. He/She will enjoy read-aloud time more if she plays an active role.
4. Be playful - You can use different voices for different characters (a high squeaky voice for a mouse or a deep booming voice for a giant). Or substitute your youngster's name for the main character's name and use family member's names for other characters.
You don't have to be an expert reader - your child will love it when you read aloud because it's you!
Summer Bucket List Challenge
Morning Drop-off
We have seen an increasing number of people not using the car line and instead parking and having their child walk in from the side. This is not ideal for many reasons, safety being number one. There have been multiple cars that have gone around vans that are unloading students on the side and we are concerned about everyone's safety in that regard. Also, if you do have to come into the school for some reason, please know that parking in a handicap space is a ticket-able and fee-able offense.
Please be patient and wait in the car line so we can assist with students coming into the building and ensure everyone is safe at all times. If you are in the line and the bell rings, you will be permitted to send your child in on time!
Lost and Found
Little Free Library - Take a Book...Share a Book
In 2018, SCA President Molly Baker completed her Little Free Library project that brought this wonderful resource to HMES. We have moved the box closer to the front of the building for easier access. Since moving it, we have seen many students take books which is wonderful! If you ever have spare books to donate, please just drop them in the box. Thank you for supporting literacy at Haymarket!
A message from our Nurse
Please pick up all of your child’s unused medication by dismissal on the last day of school, which is June 11, 2019. All unused medications must be picked up by an adult. Medications cannot be transported by students.
IF UNUSED MEDICATION IS NOT PICKED UP BY DISMISSAL ON THE LAST DAY OF SCHOOL IT WILL BE DISPOSED OF BY SCHOOL PERSONNEL in accordance with Regulation 757-4 .
If your student will continue to require that medication be kept at school for the 2019-20 school year, a new Medication Authorization form or Health Treatment Plan (i.e. Allergy Action Plan, Asthma Action Plan, or Seizure Plan of Care) must be completed for the new school year. Blank forms/plans are available online on the PWCS web site or from the school clinic/office.
Medications and new Health Treatment Plans may be brought in for the 2019-20 school year after August 20th, 2019.Please call before dropping off medications and plans to make sure the nurse will be available.
Car Tag Information - End of year procedures
Students not returning (5th graders and those moving) - You have three options:
1. Give you car rider tag to a car rider staff member on the last day,
2. Give your car tag to the office on the last day, or
3. Have your child bring your tag into school on the last day to hand into your child's teacher.
If you choose to hand in your car tag before the last day, please be prepared to have your ID ready to show a staff member. This is a safety thing so thank you for your attention to our procedures.
Summer School Information
Summer School begins July 8th for all students who have registered to attend. Students in current grades K-4 will attend their summer program at Haymarket Elementary. Our current 5th graders will attend their program at Reagan Middle School. If your child has registered to attend either program, be on the look-out for a letter from PWCS Transportation Office confirming bus stops and times.
