College and Career News
What is a College Admission Coordinator?
I frequently communicate with parents and students via e-mail. Students should make checking both your Naviance and your student e-mail a habit. Parents, please let me know if you would like me to update or add a new e-mail address so you can receive information in a timely fashion. Also, send me an e-mail if you have not been registered for a Naviance account. Graduation will be here before you know it. Make sure you have access to the information you need to forge your path!! You will find a link to send me an e-mail at the bottom of this Newsletter.
Its time to Register for the SAT and the ACT!
It is crucial that students take both the ACT and SAT in their junior year. A score from either of these tests is required to be admitted to virtually all four year colleges. Most colleges will use only your best score from either test when making admission decisions. Some students will perform better on one test or the other. Taking both is the only way to know on which test you will excel. Testing during your junior year allows time to repeat your best test at least once by the fall of your senior year. Research shows this to be the best way to earn your highest possible score.
How do the ACT and the SAT Differ?
Fee Waivers
- Free or reduced lunch
- 21st Century Scholar
- Avid
- Family receives public assistance
- Homeless
- Ward of the State
- If there is an extenuating circumstance please see either your counselor or Mrs. Coyne
**IMPORTANT*** The testing companies have established strict guidelines for the use of fee waivers. Students can receive one fee waiver for the SAT and ACT during their junior year and one fee waiver for the SAT and ACT during their senior year. Once you have registered for a test using a fee waiver, you must either take the test or reschedule by the deadline. If you cancel or do not show to the testing site, you have lost your waiver!
How to Prepare?
The best way to prepare for both the SAT and ACT is to take and work hard in rigorous classes. Free test prep is available through act.org and collegeboard.com. Don’t forget to use the access code from your PSAT score packet for free and individualized test prep.
If additional prep is needed, Khan Academy has a free SAT Prep course available at https://www.khanacademy.org/test-prep/sat. If more structure is needed, your counselor can provide the details of a free, online class taught on My Big Campus. It is important to remember that the goal of test prep is to become more familiar with the tests. The majority of the knowledge necessary to do well is obtained primarily in your classes.
