History of Veteran's Day

On November 11, 1918 at 11:00am, an armistice between the Allied nations and Germany went into effect (the eleventh hour on the eleventh day of the eleventh month). This day is generally regarded as the end of "the war to end all wars."

In November 1919, President Woodrow Wilson proclaimed November 11 as the first commemoration of Armistice Day. He stated the following:

"To us in America, the reflections of Armistice Day will be filled with solemn pride in the heroism of those who died in the country's service and with gratitude for the victory, both because of the thing from which it has freed us and because of the opportunity it has given America to show her sympathy with peace and justice in the councils of the nations..."

On May 13, 1938, the Act of 1938 was approved that stated November 11th would be a legal holiday each year and would be dedicated to the cause of world peace and to be thereafter celebrated and known as "Armistice Day." It was originally set aside to honor veterans of World War I, but after World War II had the greatest mobilization of soldiers, sailors, Marines, and airmen in the Nation's history AND after the American forces had fought aggression in Korea, the 83rd Congress amended the Act of 1938 by replacing the word "Armistice" with the word "Veterans." By doing this, November 11th became a day to honor ALL veterans of ALL wars.

Remember to thank a Veteran this November 11th (and any other day of the year).
