Next Steps- Discussions of cultural sensitivity and awareness
We will further our discussion from March 11th PD at our next staff meeting, April 10th.
A Note from Jorge Melgoza about what the next step is, in the classroom:
"Next steps should involve a unified front where everyone is building space in their classes on a given day to discuss how recent events where exhibited behaviors simply did not align with the values of NHS.
I would not focus on just this one incident because too much time has lapsed and students will call you on it. It is better to fold all the incidents under the umbrella of non-negotiables and as examples of the toxic environment you need their help to change. They need to feel they are part of the solution and not be talked at or they will shut down.
The lesson I have found most helpful during these incidents is to create a lesson plan on intent vs impact using the four agreements for a courageous conversation to begin to unseat the toxic environment that has been normalized for too long and begin to unpack their thought process."
Having a small group of staff meet together to develop this lesson and debrief it with the rest of the staff might be the most effective and unified way to accomplish this."

A conversation with our Director of Food Services
How long have you been at Northgate and who did we steal you from? This is my first year at Northgate. I have worked for MDUSD for 15 years. I was the Food Service Manager at Mt. Diablo High for 13 years.
What did you do before Food Services? I went to Orange Coast College under the GI bill for restaurant management and worked in restaurants for over 20 years before MDUSD. Spent 3 years at The Boy Scout's Camp Wolfeboro as the Cook, known as Raider Dave and served over 10,600 meals during those 3 years.
What hobby would you pick up if time and money were no matters? I have a pontoon boat and getaway place at Lake Oroville, where I hope to retire as well. Hobby that money wouldn't limit would be a bigger boat.
Tell us about your family! Married for 30 years. I have 2 Sons Greg and Michael. Greg is getting his Masters at Chico State and Michael is in in the Navy Reserve currently on his 2nd deployment.
What was your worst job yet ever? Worst Job was a summer at a pet shop!!! Cleaning up after some animals every day in confining spaces.
What is one job you would not do well in? Not cut out for a desk job!
What is your money dish for guests? Money dish is Gringo Dave's salsa.
What is one small thing that could make your day? The kids make my day!!!
