Hello Northrop Families!

I hope this email finds you all enjoying our warm summer days! I have appreciated the slower pace of the summer for a few weeks. That said, I am looking forward to the hustle and bustle of the new school year and I will be excited to see students, staff, and families back at Northrop at the end of August.


This is a brief update on Northrop's happenings as we look forward to the year ahead!

Class Placement for 2017-2018

As many of you are aware, we changed our process for notifying students and families of class placement decisions this spring. In the past students were told their teacher for next year on their final report card. Moving forward we will be sending a letter to each student during the week before Open House, typically the 3rd week in August, to tell them their class placement for the upcoming year.


We changed our process because finalizing class placements with current Northrop students and families in June posed a challenge for our administrator and office staff to continue to keep the needs of each classroom balanced over the summer when students move in or out of Northrop.


Tentative class placement decisions were made in the spring before teachers went home for the summer. Our office will mail final class placements to student's address on file the week of August 14. Please call our Northrop Office at 612-668-4520 with questions or to update your contact information. Office staff will be returning to the Office beginning on Monday, August 14.

Northrop Construction Update

Construction of our new lunchroom and kitchen is in full swing at Northrop. We are on track and excited for the updates to our building! At this point, construction is centralized in the garden level (the basement of our original building) and the area is sectioned off. Students will not be allowed to enter the construction area without parent and teacher approval. (We are thinking tours of the construction area with the Project Manager might be a fun reward as the school year progresses! I know I think it is cool equipment and work! Maybe students will too?!?)


Please note that all construction will be behind locked gates and doors to ensure student safety. Our construction team is highly experienced with construction at school sites and walked me through the school to highlight all of the safety precautions that are in place so construction can safely continue into the school year. We are currently in Phase One of the project focused on the construction of the lunchroom and kitchen. Phase Two will be the construction of the new Music and Art room where the current lunchroom is located. Phase Two is scheduled to begin late Winter or early Spring. All phases of construction will be complete by the beginning of the 2018-2019 school year.

Parking at Northrop during the 2017-2018 School Year

Due to our construction there will be less open parking spaces in our parking lots. The construction fence will go around an area of the parking lot for most of the school year. Parking on the street may be parents and staff members only option on many days for student drop off, student pick up, and for special events at Northrop. Please plan to give yourself a little more time for parking if you have usually parked in the lot. Our parking lot will return once construction is complete in August, 2018. Thank you for your patience and flexibility.

Consider Joining Our Northrop Site Council!

We have three open seats on our Northrop Site Council for the 2017-2018 school year. The Site Council is an advisory group to the Principal on school-based decisions. Our Northrop Site Council meets once per month and provides input and feedback to the principal on topics such as budget, school events, and academic topics. Please complete the Google Form below by Friday, August 4 to express your interest in serving on Site Council. Questions can be directed to Amy.Jahnke@mpls.k12.mn.us

Weeding and Popsicles at Northrop! Come one, come all!

Our Principal, Miss Amy will host her 2nd Annual Weeding and Popsicle event at Northrop on Saturday, August 19 at 9:00 AM (until we get tired, by 11:00AM :-). Bring your gloves, hedge trimmers, trowels, and clippers to Northrop for a casual morning of outdoor work.


We are looking for helpers of all ages to pull weeds and trim bushes to get our grounds looking great for Back-to-School Night Open House and Ice Cream Social on Thursday, August 24. Let's hope for a dry morning on Saturday, August 19th! We hope to see you there!


Our school garden is also in need of some love. Your time is GREATLY appreciated If you and your family have even a few minutes to stop by school to help weed! Don't feel like you have to do much, every weed helps! Thank you!
