Recipe of the week
Crispy Fried Chicken
8 servings
489 calories
Ingredients
- 1 (4 pound) chicken, cut into pieces
- 1 cup buttermilk
- 2 cups all-purpose flour for coating
- 1 teaspoon paprika
- salt and pepper to taste
- 2 quarts vegetable oil for frying
Directions
- Take your cut up chicken pieces and skin them if you prefer. Put the flour in a large plastic bag (let the amount of chicken you are cooking dictate the amount of flour you use). Season the flour with paprika, salt and pepper to taste (paprika helps to brown the chicken).
- Dip chicken pieces in buttermilk then, a few at a time, put them in the bag with the flour, seal the bag and shake to coat well. Place the coated chicken on a cookie sheet or tray, and cover with a clean dish towel or waxed paper. LET SIT UNTIL THE FLOUR IS OF A PASTE-LIKE CONSISTENCY. THIS IS CRUCIAL!
- Fill a large skillet (cast iron is best) about 1/3 to 1/2 full with vegetable oil. Heat until VERY hot. Put in as many chicken pieces as the skillet can hold. Brown the chicken in HOT oil on both sides. When browned, reduce heat and cover skillet; let cook for 30 minutes (the chicken will be cooked through but not crispy). Remove cover, raise heat again and continue to fry until crispy.
- Drain the fried chicken on paper towels. Depending on how much chicken you have, you may have to fry in a few shifts. Keep the finished chicken in a slightly warm oven while preparing the rest.

MEET MR. KINARD
Why did you choose to teach at DMS?
DMS was the first place he was hired after one year at Spanish Fort. He chose to teach and coach because he loves working with kids.
What is your expectation for your students?
Mr. Kinard always tells kids not to let a single day go by without learning something new!
Have you ever taught or worked at a different school? How long have you been at DMS?
He worked one year at Spanish Fort, and this is his 16th year at DMS.
Why did you choose to teach 7th grade science?
Mr. Kinard loves teaching 7th grade science because biology is his favorite subject. He said he likes teaching 7th graders also because middle school is new for them.
What makes you unique as a teacher?
He says that he says a very unique ability to explain difficult science topics in a way that his 7th graders really understand and can compare to real things they have experienced in life.

January Career Explorations
Story of the Week
Setting: New York
Time: April, 2016
Main Characters: Violet & Keith
Extras: Mr. Tony, Violet’s Mom, and “Violet’s friend”
It all started when Keith and I were devouring our food at a local Chinese restaurant that we go to often. It was pretty much a normal day; Mr. Tony greeted us and told us a cheesy joke, we sat down at a table near the back, and we ordered the usual. That is, up until we were heading home and I looked at a puddle, it wasn’t me. There was a strange, demonic-looking young girl staring back at me. I didn’t understand what was happening and I didn’t want Keith thinking that I was any crazier than he already thinks I am. So I just kept walking and tried to avoid looking at any puddles. Then I finally got home. My mom was trembling, and not acting right. “What’s wrong?” I questioned. She shook and gestured towards our bathroom, but I refused to leave her. Not for her sake, but I was afraid to look at my reflection again. She stared at me in befuddlement and expected me to head straight towards the bathroom because she thinks I’m courageous. She walked me to our bathroom and shoved me through the doorway. She then jerked my head towards the mirror and turned off the lights. “What is Wrong with you! Let me out of here!” I squealed. I turned the lights back on and there she was. The little eerie girl was just staring at me, and she produced a blood curdling shriek. After that it was a little fuzzy, but I remember escaping the bathroom, leaving my apartment, and sleeping over at a friend’s house.
I woke up the next day and left my friend’s house to go talk to Keith, and tell him all of the odd things that were happening to me. The only thing was, I couldn’t find him. I texted him, but there was no answer. So, I did the only thing that my delusional self thought would be right, and go to the police and tell them everything that’s been happening and then file a missing person report. Of course, they thought I was insane and called my mom. I decided that it was a bad idea and ran away from the precinct. So now, a little girl is after me, my insane mother is after me, and the police are after me. Better yet, the only person that would actually know what to do in this kind of situation is missing. I am alone and scared, and I don’t know what to do. Just when I think I’ve escaped my ever waiting doom the eerie girl appears again. I tried to run, but I couldn’t move anywhere. She walked towards me, slowly, and I couldn’t scream for help. It’s almost as if she was controlling my body. She was right in front of me then, and that was it for me. I was slaughtered and thrown across the park I was in. Not many people have heard of me since, but when they do they are cursed with the same unavoidable death I had.
