The Muscular System
By Cassie and Jesus
What Does the Muscular System do?
Supports movement; controls walking, talking, sitting, standing, eating and other daily activities it also maintains posture and helps to circulate blood and other substances
Types of Muscle Tissue
Smooth Muscle
- It is an involuntary muscle because it is not under conscious control
- The cells in this muscle are long narrow fibers
- 1 nucleus per fiber in the cell
- Helps form the walls of blood vessels and hollow organs
- Contractions of the muscle can cause problems
Cardiac Muscle
- Forms the walls of the heart
- The contractions of the muscle produce the heart beat
- The cells are thick dark bands called
- "Intergalactic Disks"
Skeletal Muscle
- Voluntary because control of the muscle is possible
- Individual cells are long and thread like (often called fibers)
- Attached to bones and when contracted produce voluntary/controlled body movements
Three Types of Homeostatic Imbalances
Myopathy
- Affects the Skeletal Muscle's tone and contraction abilities
- Caused by genetic problems or metabolic disorders
- Treatments range from drug therapy for muscular dystrophies and inflammatory problems also weight loss is suggested
Muscular Dystrophy
- Affects the muscle fibers and causes them to be abnormally susceptible to damage and make the muscles very week.
- Caused by deficiency of a protein known as dystrophin
- The goals of the doctor is to work towards a slow progression of decreasing symptoms sometimes this includes prescribing anti depressants
- Fibromyalgia results in widespread pain throughout every muscle in a person's body
- Symptoms of Fibromyalgia include joint tenderness, tiredness and sleep disturbances
- There is no treatment pain management is the best way to handle the issue
