December 2020 - Vol. 2 Issue 3
Dollenger says....
Greetings North East High School Family,
As virtual learning continues to be our method of instructional delivery, it is critical that I reinforce the main lesson that we have learned from the first marking period. The lesson is that students who actively engaged with our virtual learning did well. Those who did not, fell behind and struggled to catch up. This does not mean that this year is easy. As an adult who struggles with ADHD himself, the distractions of working from home can be intense. Even once logging on it is difficult to catch the fine points of instruction and requirements for completing assignments correctly. It takes much more than simply logging on, it takes focus and concentration.
Students, please devote yourself with attention to the synchronous lessons and complete work on the assignment timelines.
- Take advantage of the office hours and times during class to get questions answered by teachers.
- Use the chat box.
- Don’t “multitask” during instruction.
- Complete work.
Parents, please check on your students’ progress and communicate concerns to teachers and counselors. Marking Period 2 is flying by, so take action now and take control of your grades. We all want our students to excel and in the end be prepared for life.
We know you can do it.

CCPS Moving Forward....
To All CCPS:
In our initial communication, we indicated that all students would remain virtual through December 7. We have been closely monitoring Cecil County’s COVID-19 data which continues to stay above the desired benchmarks for allowing the return of students as recommended by the Cecil County Health Department. As such, we will not bring students back during the week of December 7. We will continue to keep a close watch on the numbers and if there is a marked improvement we will consider bringing students back for the week of December 14.
Our plan for bringing students back in groups will be similar to our re-entry at the beginning of the school year. The first group to return will be the initial 5% of students previously identified by schools. The initial group of students re-entering will not include the Virtual Learning Lab students, we will try to accommodate these students as the data allows. Moreover, as local COVID-19 improves, we will then be able to expand to 25% of students one day a week and progress from there. In light of the winter break beginning on December 23, we do not anticipate being able to bring back students beyond the initial 5% prior to January 4, 2021.
In addition, CCPS athletics will continue to be suspended until further notice. Athletic programs will be addressed as part of the reopening plan and will be dependent upon Cecil County’s COVID-19 metrics under the advice of the Cecil County Health Department.
As was noted in our initial communication, the numbers that we monitor are the positivity rate and the case rate per 100,000 population. The Health Department has advised that the positivity rate would need to be less than 5% and the case rate less than 15/100,000 for us to expand our enrollment beyond our initial 5% student group. As of today, Cecil County’s numbers include a 9.6% positivity rate and 32.4/100,000 case rate.
We know that this is frustrating for everyone and we are looking forward to bringing students back as soon as we are safely able. A decision on December 14th will be made on December 9th.
