Petaluma High Engineering Road Show at La Tercera Elementary
Wednesday, May 11th was an exciting day at La Tercera Elementary School. The Robotics and Science Olympiad teams along with 25 other 3rd, 4th, 5th, and 6th grade students welcomed the Petaluma High School Principles of Engineering class. Petaluma High teacher, Jennifer Eaton, brought her students and their robots for a special presentation and some hands-on time for the La Tercera Elementary students.
First, Petaluma High students explained their project. They had one month to build a robot that could compete in two separate competitions. In the first competition the robot had to drive autonomously to a certain distance down a court and shoot ping pong balls into goals. The robot had to use 1-2 sensors that could detect a change in the game field, such as colored line on the court, and cause the robot to stop. Good programing was the key element here. In the second competition, the robots were basically playing a giant game of dodgeball and were operated by remotes. Petaluma High students discussed each separate design phase of their project and deadlines they faced. They discussed design constraints such as the mandatory use of at least three to five motors or how their robot had to shoot ping pong balls at three different angles between 0 and 90º. Students shared their failures and success with the La Tercera students. La Tercera students asked insightful questions about the robots, the engineering process, and even pondered alternate designs.
After learning about how to operate the robots, La Tercera students were thrilled when they were invited to drive the robots and shoot ping pong balls! Students rotated around the room and learned about each robot, each group’s challenges, and how they overcame the obstacles they faced, and, of course, learned to drive the different robots.

Boys Lacrosse Falls to Miramonte in NCS Playoffs
After a fine regular season, the varsity boys lacrosse team fell to a surprisingly quick visiting team from Miramonte High. Though they trailed throughout, there was a feeling in the stands that a win was always possible, but the clock ran out on the season. The many freshmen and sophomores will carry the torch on to the 2017 season, but it is sad to say goodbye to some terrific seniors.
Congratulations to the boys and Coach Louchis on an excellent season!

Kiss a Senior Goodbye!
Looking for a way to say goodbye to this years seniors? Well you're in luck! The junior class this year is organizing a fundraiser called "Kiss and Hug a Senior Goodbye!" You can choose to send either 5 Hershey's Hugs or 5 Hershey's Kisses in a package with a personalized tag. Each one is $1 and will be delivered to the seniors of your choice while they're in class. If you're interested, please fill out the following form and bring your payment into the office. If you're sending more than one, please fill out one form per senior. Thank you!

Campus Clean Up a Rousing Success!
With Debi Richardson leading the way, a merry band of neighbors, staff, and students joined forces to sweep, rake, trim, and spruce up the campus as we get ready for graduation. The team included a group of 25 from the Mormon church on Western, Victor Brazil, Kevin Jackson, Elizabeth Schleth, Margarita Lua, and many students. Ms. Schleth even brought bark and plants. Way to go, team! Thanks to all for your volunteer spirit!

Summer School @ Petaluma HIgh
Summer school will be held at PHS this summer. We will be using rooms in the C-wing and several science rooms. Summer School begins on June 20 and runs until July 22. Debi Richardson (PHS) and Nikki Samuel (Casa) will be principals this year. For more information on summer school, please contact your counselor.
iPad Collection - Seniors This Week; 9th-11th Next Week
As we approach the end of the year, one upcoming task is the collection of student iPads.
Senior iPads will be collected on 5/18 and 5/19 during Gov/Econ classes. These iPads will be distributed in the fall to our incoming freshmen so it is critical that we get these all turned in. We know that yearbook distribution and Prom is coming up and don't want anything to get in the way of those happenings. The best way is to take care of any outstanding text books, fines, or iPad related equipment and get them turned in. Underclassmen will turn in their iPads with their English classes from 5/23 - 5/26.
Loss or damage to iPads and accessories will be invoiced using the following guidelines, unless the student has contributed to the iPad Coverage Plan.
- iPad Chargers - Complete $44.00
Brick - $22.00
Wire - $22.00
- Case - $25.00
- iPad - Lost, Stolen, Intentional Damage - $500.00
- iPad - Cracked screen, not shattered - $50.00
Seniors will need to turn in an Apple manufactured charger and cord with their iPads. If underclassmen have replaced chargers with after-market products, they will be collected with the iPad and returned to the student for use during the next school year.
Project Grad Update from Rita Schaefer
Project Graduation "Safe and Sober Grad Night" would like to thank parents and seniors for choosing a safe option to celebrate the night of their graduation from high school. Please know that this night is possible through the sole support of members and businesses around you in the community that believe strongly in this program. We receive no money from State, Federal, or local Education programs. And 25 years of no fatality on graduation night is the greatest reward for all the work.
Paperwork was mailed home in early April with information about the event. There are two forms (or both sides of the yellow sheet mailed home) that must be completed by both the student and the parent. The admission is $50 and should be attached and returned, in a sealed envelope. At this date, please drop off in the main office instead of mailing. Information will also be presented to the government and econ classes.
A few items of note: everyone should check in at the Project Grad table in the quad the last week of school to make sure all paperwork is in order. On Saturday night, please only bring phone and I.D. (or photocopy). No purses, backpacks, etc. will be allowed. Please get a ride, there is limited parking and you can't park in the shopping center. Most important is that you will be tired when you leave! Arrive between 7:30 and 9:00- late arrivals must have a parent/guardian sign them in. Anyone leaving before the event end at 3:30 or 4:00 will need to be signed out by parent/guardian as well.
We want all seniors to attend, even those who may not be 'walking' that morning. If you have any questions, burdens, concerns, please contact me at ritaprojectgrad@gmail.com. Thank you again for your support, I'd like to encourage you to continue your support of this program by 'liking' our facebook page, Petaluma High School Project Graduation, for news and updates.
With my deepest thanks,
Rita Schaefer
President

Update from the Students in Space Experiment Mission 7
Exciting news from Science! Biology students are anxiously awaiting the return of their micro-gravity experiment from space. See the announcement from mission control below:
"The SSEP Mission 7 Odyssey II payload of experiments will be in-hand at NanoRacks in Houston today. All, but one mini-lab (Fitchburg, who is scheduled for harvesting on Monday) will be held at NanoRacks through the weekend. All mini-labs will be shipped overnight on Monday for delivery on Tuesday.
Holding through the weekend is necessary for those experiments requiring refrigeration, and desirable for the other mini-labs because it minimizes the amount of time mini-labs will be out of the hands of the teams/NanoRacks and in the hands of FedEx. This is not a statement against FedEx, only a statement about the irreplaceable nature of these packages.
Congratulations teams and good luck in harvesting and analysis!"

Trojans Track and Field Co-Champs With PIner
This week, they will be prepping for NCS qualifying on the weekend.
Baseball Rolling On - Senior NIght
The Trojans enjoyed the celebration of Senior Night with a convincing shutout of El Molino 7-0. Behind six strong innings from Cole Petersen and two hits and three runs driven in from Luke Wheless (both seniors), the Trojans wrapped up their regular season in fine style. Below is an update form Coach Cochrun:
Our awards will be next Sunday the 22nd in the Multi at 6pm.
Varsity Season Update:
The Varsity team finishes with an overall record of 16-8 and a league record of 10-2. Analy is the league champion, Petaluma is second, Sonoma is third, and Piner is fourth. This week is the Sonoma County League tournament at Arnold Field in Sonoma. #1 Analy will play #4 Piner on Tuesday at 7pm. #2 Petaluma will play #3 Sonoma on Wednesday at 7pm. The winners of those two games will play on Thursday at 7pm.
The North Coast Section Championship Tournament starts the following week. I will turn in our application this week and the seeding committee will meet on Sunday the 22nd to determine the entries and the seeds. Brackets are usually released on the NCS website sometime before noon on that day."

Petaluma Watershed Classrooms - Growing Awareness for Our River
On Wednesday, May 11, Friends of the Petaluma River hosted the First Annual Watershed Classroom Student Showcase at Petaluma High School. Teachers, students, community members and representatives from local environmental organizations were very impressed with presentations by student groups. Four schools were represented with students ranging from the 2nd to the 12th grade. Participating students received cash awards of $100 each, along with Congressional Certificates signed by Congressman Jared Huffman.
Kris Camacho, our superb Environmental Science teacher, was honored with the Petaluma Watershed Classroom Teacher of the Year. Please see photos and video below!
The goal of the program is to increase awareness about the Petaluma Watershed and the critical role it plays in our community. With continuing expansion of classrooms, one day it may be possible to say that every Petaluma City Schools student will graduate with knowledge of our river.
