Did You Know?
- One in five Americans will develop skin cancer in their lifetime.
- The annual cost of treating skin cancer in the US is estimated at 8.1 billion dollars.
- Each year there are more new cases of skin cancer than breast, lung, prostate, and colon cancer combined.
Three types of skin cancer
Melanoma
While it only affects 4% of all skin cancer cases, they have a 73% mortality rate. Usually people who easily burn or tan easily are at a higher risk. Treatments would include seeing a dermatologist or oncologist, and undergoing surgery or radiation.
Non Melanoma: Squamous Cell Carcinoma
The second most common type of skin cancer is caused by ultra violet rays from the sun or sunbeds. Can be easily treated when detected early, but if it spreads, which is unlikely, it can become dangerous and painful.
Non Melanoma: Basal Cell Carcinoma
Basel cell carcinoma usually grows over a long period of time and starts off as a small shiny bump. Its caused by the UV rays in the sun and is the least risky type of skin cancer when detected early.
