Shepard News & Notes
December 9, 2016
Hello Shepard Families:
One of the most divisive and contentious presidential campaigns in our history is now behind us. However, in the wake of this election, schools across the country have reported a rise in the number of bias incidents and incidents of violence. In response, the following national education organizations have called for schools to affirm the inclusive values that are the foundation of healthy learning cultures.
The School Superintendents Association (AASA)
American School Counselor Association (ASCA)
National Association of Elementary School Principals (NAESP)
National Association of Independent Schools (NAIS)
National Association of School Psychologists (NASP)
National Association of Secondary School Principals (NASSP)
National School Boards Association (NSBA)
National Parent Teacher Association (NPTA)
I am proud that our school has not experienced similar issues of intolerance and bias. I am also proud that our school's shared values explicitly state that we expect all members of our school community to exhibit respect toward one another. Therefore, it is easy for us, as a school organization, to support the call to reaffirm our commitment to respect and inclusion.
Over the next semester, our social studies teachers will lead discussions with students about what has occurred post-election. The teachers/staff will work with students to examine issues and values such as civil discourse, inclusion, empathy, and unity.
These conversations will not be political; students won’t need to take sides. Rather, they will provide an opportunity to examine the principles of our democracy and how exploring opposing views while remaining respectful of others strengthens our union - and strengthens the Spartan team!
I hope you will join us in efforts to promote respect, tolerance, and inclusion in our school community and beyond.
Warm Regards,
John
