Pilgrims and Native Americans Celebrate Thanksgiving at Preschool
We had the pleasure of our SLS Preschoolers visiting us last week to celebrate Thanksgiving with the Kindergarteners. They are a wonderful reminder for us all to celebrate the JOY of every season, and treasure our FAITH and FRIENDSHIPS every day of the year. I hope you all had a wonderful Thanksgiving with your families, and have a blessed Advent!
Mrs. Riedeman
We had so much fun sharing in our community of friends, eating popcorn wrapped like corn-on-the-cob, going on feather hunts, playing stick games and making butter.
We took time throughout the week, remembering the spirit of thanksgiving as Pre-K reflected with their buddies on all they have to be thankful for and our Early Learners thought of people, places, and things that have been a blessing to them.
We spent many of our days throughout the month of November telling the story of the first Thanksgiving, including the journey of the Pilgrims from their homeland. The story of friendship and faith endures, and was a central part of everything we did throughout the month."

The Cardinal STEAM Lab
The SLS PTO is excited to announce their grant proposal was approved by the William & Martha Hillenbrand Foundation to build "The Cardinal STEAM lab." STEAM education-based lessons increase critical thinking skills, expose students to creative processes, provide unique ways to problem-solve, encourages growth mindset, and offers collaborative opportunities with peers fostering participants to feel more group identity and pride with fellow students. With STEAM, students learn the benefit of trial and error, necessitating the development of problem-solving skills and encouraging creative “outside-the-box” thinking.
As the PTO, our job is to advocate for the entire student body. We strongly feel that every student at St. Louis School should have access and exposure to STEAM learning experiences. Creating a centralized space for the Cardinal STEAM lab will allow every student, K-8 and Pre-K, to engage in hands-on learning experiences with technology tools that lead to skills critical for their success. Additionally, the lab can be utilized for yearly Enrichment classes open to students after school through the PTO Enrichment Committee.
The Indiana Department of Education (DOE) has set forth a strategic plan to implement STEAM/STEM instruction into all schools. For St. Louis School to offer the best educational experience to our students, stay competitive with area schools, and comply with Indiana DOE standards, STEM/STEAM must be incorporated into the curriculum for all students. Equipping students with the tools used in the changing landscape of today’s workforce increases career awareness and provides the skills needed to be successful beyond the classroom. In short, STEM/STEAM education is driving standards set by the Indiana DOE.
By providing our St. Louis School educators with the opportunity to utilize hands-on STEAM activities and equipment, they can expand and solidify student understanding of lessons. Students will build self-confidence with each little success and learn resilience in contrast to failure. By extension of that, we hope SLS students will ask themselves, “What am I capable of?” Discovering their potential, expanding their skills and exceeding their expectations as they create is truly empowering. Our goal is to give every student at SLS that opportunity.
We are honored and grateful beyond words to the William & Martha Hillenbrand Foundation for granting us the opportunity to bring this vision to fruition which will benefit every student at SLS!

Families Helping Families
For more than 25 years, Families Helping Families (FHF) has brought together a community of local churches and organizations at Christmas time, united in one simple mission, to help our friends and neighbors most in need. National Junior Honor Society (NJHS) is taking the lead this year in organizing our efforts at SLS.
We are grateful that not only are we dedicated to excellence in academics at SLS, we're also dedicated to the teachings of Jesus Christ. We talk about blessings and gratitude in our classroom. We teach our children to not just understand the Word of God, but how to truly live that Word. We frequently discuss how we are called to serve others and the importance of giving back.
We thought a great representation of our values and the lessons that we are teaching at SLS would be to participate as a school in Families Helping Families. The school’s goal is to purchase a book for every child in the program that will have gifts distributed by St. Louis Catholic Church.
If you would like to contribute to purchasing the books that will be a gift from St. Louis School, please send $2 or $3 with your child (in a marked envelope Families Helping Families Books) to turn in to their homeroom teacher by 12/4.
NJHS will also be conducting REINDEER GAMES as a new fundraiser the week after Thanksgiving (THIS WEEK ONLY) to raise additional money to cover the cost of the projected $1,000.00 worth of books. More information on the REINDEER GAMES can be found below and on our website.
We greatly appreciate your support for this great cause! For questions, please contact Jill Weberding #865-250-5908 or Janet Wilson at jwilson@st.louisschool.org
Sincerely,
Families Helping Families Committee

SLS Faculty Giving Tree
The SLS Faculty Giving Tree will be offered again this year for those interested in honoring our teachers and staff during the Christmas Season! The Tree will be ready for visitors on Wednesday, December 4, 2019.
Here is how it works.
OPTION 1 (The Tags)
The PTO asks each teacher to list some personal and school items that they would like to receive. Teachers fill out a wish list. Tags are made and displayed on a "tree" bulletin board outside the Kindergarten rooms for parents to select and purchase the item. The tags will stay up until Wednesday, December 18.
OPTION 2 (You want to buy for many teachers)
This option is popular for those families that wish to honor several teachers. Using the attached form, select the teachers you would like to honor, and send it back to the office with any amount. This amount will be divided among the teachers that you select. Please make checks payable to "Batesville Chamber of Commerce", as the teachers will receive Batesville Bucks. Place the form and your check in an envelope marked “Giving Tree” and send to the school office by Monday, December 16th, 2019.
Of course, this program is optional. It is a great way to maximize your gift giving dollars. The teachers get exactly what they want and you save time!! It's a win win!
Any questions, please call Amy Tonges at 812-212-6702.
Thanks for participating in this year's giving tree!

Nurse's News - Food Allergy Reminder
I just wanted to send out a friendly reminder of St. Louis School policy regarding food items in the school, especially as the holiday season approaches. All food is ordered through the Cafeteria from a peanut-free facility for meals, snacks, and parties. Please remember that we do not bring in outside food and snacks for holiday/birthday parties due to the potential of life-threatening food allergies.
It is also imperative to remind students never to share food items with others at St. Louis unless it has been approved and has been provided by the Cafeteria.
Please contact me if there are any further questions. Thank you for keeping our students safe!
