March-April 2018
March/April 2018
Dear Waukesha East Parents/Guardians and Students,
Welcome to spring! We just finished up the third quarter of the school year and progress grades are posted in Infinite Campus for our 10th and 11th grade students and senior program teachers provided students with progress reports before spring break. If you have any questions or concerns about grades/progress reports I encourage you to reach out to the program teachers.
Planning and preparation for the 2018-2019 school year is underway. After spring break I will be meeting with all of our currently enrolled 10th and 11th grade students to discuss enrollment for the 2018-2019 school year. As a reminder, current students are not guaranteed a spot at East for the following school year. Attendance, academics, and behavior will all be considered during our enrollment decision-making process. Next school year East will only be enrolling juniors and seniors due to a new credit recovery model being implemented at the home high schools in the fall. With this change we are currently in the process of revamping our program options and schedule for the 2018-2019 school year. Updated program information will be available on our school website when finalized.
Looking ahead, our 10th graders will be taking the ACT Aspire Test after spring break. Also, juniors will be taking the Civics test during their Social Studies class. Any seniors that have not passed the Civics exam will also be given opportunity to take the Civics test as it is a graduation requirement.
As always, feel free to contact me with any questions or concerns you may have at 262-970-4354 or tchambers@waukesha.k12.wi.us.
Sincerely,
Tiara Chambers
Principal

March Madness Attendance Update
In March, we held a school-wide attendance classroom competition. Each week was another round until we were down to two classrooms for the final week of March before Spring Break. It was really close, but Ms. Macchia’s afternoon class pulled through to win the championship! Congrats to all of the students in Ms. Macchia’s PM English 11 class who pulled through for the win! Students were treated to a pizza lunch after the break. Also throughout March, students received a raffle ticket each day when they arrived to school on time. Weekly drawings were held in the classrooms and prizes such as movie tickets, gift cards, earbuds, and phone chargers could be chosen to reward students for good attendance.
Looking Ahead: Community Happenings
Prevention in Action
Tuesday, May 15th 5:30pm
Prevention in Action presented by Drug Free Communities of Waukesha County will be hosting an event at the Waukesha Civic Theatre. All parents and students middle school age and up are invited to attend. The event is free and open to the public. East Alternative School will be looking to take a group of students to volunteer at the event and to hear Rise Together’s presentation to educate, engage and empower youth around the issues that affect them the most. Please join us for an evening of inspiration and prevention! Contact Mrs. Bentley at 262-970-4324 for more information.
Credit Program Update:
The students in the East Credit Program continue the challenging work of finishing their classes in time to graduate with their class in June.
We have many success stories to celebrate--21 students have completed all of their classes and graduation requirements. Congratulations to these highly motivated and hardworking students.
Congratulations to our most recent graduates: Connor, Jamie, Serena, Taven, Shiaya, Nick, and Anthony. Excellent work!
“Children need the three F's of life: a family that loves them, even if it is not a biological family; friends who will pull them up rather than down; and a moral compass, a sense of right and wrong. The three Fs sound like a sound bite, but are firmly based on research in resilience, asset-development, connectedness and protective factors.” Dr. Stephen Sroka
