Our Relentless Focus on Literacy
One of our big goals this year is to increase our academic achievement, specifically in Reading. We are doing this with a relentless focus on literacy. In addition to a 90 minute content block for teaching ELA, we have a 45 minute intervention and enrichment block to provide further differentiation to meet the students where they are. We also have a 20 minute homeroom time in which students are again engaged in some type if literacy activity.
How can you support our relentless focus on literacy?
One simple thing you can do is to require students to read each evening. This can be silent reading or reading aloud to a family member, pet, or even stuffed animal. If they are reading silently, have them tell you about what they read. Other easy ideas that you can do is to create a journal in which you write back and forth to each other or simply make efforts to use a variety of different vocabulary word and explain their definition.
