Simon Elementary School Newsletter

Back to School 2019 Edition - August & September

From the Principal

Welcome to a new school year! It is my hope that this year is a highly positive year for all students filled full of valuable and memorable learning experiences. Learning best occurs through a partnership between home and school. There are a number of messages for success that parents can share and reinforce at home, including:

-Learning is important.

-Always give your best effort.

-Don't give up just because something is difficult.

-Don't be afraid to ask for help.

-If at first you don't succeed, try and try again.

-You can do this!

-I believe in you.

At Simon, there are three main categories that compose our school-wide behavior expectations: Respectful, Responsible, and Ready. Examples of how children can show these qualities are shared in the classroom as well as during morning announcements. We ask for your help in reinforcing these to develop traits for success for students.

As we make our way through the year, feel free to reach out with any questions or concerns you have or assistance you may need regarding your child's education.

School Bus Traffic Safety

Student safety is of utmost importance. Please remember that it is against the law to pass a stopped school bus with its red lights flashing. Recently, the State of Illinois doubled the fine for passing a stopped school bus.

Buses unload on Benton Street in front of the school between 7:40 and 8:00 a.m. Buses load at the end of the day between 2:45 and 2:55. Any traffic on Benton Street, between Winnebago Street and Cunningham Road, should not try to go around stopped school buses.

Thank you for your cooperation in helping us to ensure that all of our students are safe when boarding and departing our buses.

2019-2020 Student Handbook Available Online

The 2019-2020 Parent/Student Handbook is available on the school website. (To view the handbook, click this link.) Please take some time to talk about the points covered in this document with your child. If you are not able to view it and would like a hard copy, let the office know, and we would be happy to send a hard copy home with your student.

Keeping your information current

It is extremely important that you keep your contact information we have on file current. If you have a change in phone number, email address, home address, etc. please let us know promptly so that our records can be updated. In the event of emergency, or in the need of general communication, it is essential that we have the correct information on file.

Changing information can be done by stopping by the school office or by calling the office at 815-335-2318.

Nurse's Office Update

Each year, kindergarten students and any students new to the district shall provide evidence of completion of a school physical, including updated immunization records. Kindergarten and any new students also need to provide proof of an eye examination. The final deadline for this documentation is October 15th as set by school code, the Illinois law governing schools. If this is not done by October 15th, students shall not attend school until it is resolved.

The nurse's office has sent letters to anyone missing this information. If you received a letter, please take action promptly to ensure that that there are no interruptions in your child's attendance.

At any time, if there are health issues that arise with your child, changes in medication, or questions that you have, do not hesitate to call the nurse's office.

The importance of reading

Just a few minutes a day can make a huge impact in a child's literacy skills. For younger children, reading time may be having a parent sit and read to him. For older children, this will likely shift to time dedicated to independent reading. According to The Children's Bureau, there are a number of benefits that can result from reading to your child such as:

  • Supported cognitive development
  • Improved language skills
  • Prepare for academic success
  • A special bond with your child
  • Increased concentration and discipline
  • Improved imagination and creativity
  • Cultivate a lifelong love of reading

The importance of early literacy is undeniable. For the full article from The Children's Bureau on the value in reading to your child, click here.

Simon Spotlight: Winnebago PTO

The Winnebago PTO does a great deal to support our students, teachers, and elementary schools. The PTO is an organization open to parents of all Preschool through 5th grade students. The organization is looking for parents who are willing to lend a helping hand. The events and activities coordinated through PTO rely on the work of individuals willing to volunteer. There are differing levels of involvement, ranging from helping with one particular event to serving as a PTO board member.

We invite and encourage interested parents to attend PTO meetings, which are held in the McNair Library at 4:00. Meetings will not take place every month but will follow this schedule:

    • Tuesday, October 8

    • Tuesday, December 10

    • Tuesday, February 11

    • Tuesday, April 1

The annual PTO spirit wear sale is under way and ends Friday, September 6th. Completed order forms should be turned in to the office by this date.
