Our kinder team is so excited to come back and hit the ground running. We are focusing on letters B, I, and G. Our themes are penguins, snow and winter! Please keep checking the weather and make sure you child is dressed accordingly. Report cards go home January 10th. There will be no school January 20th. Let's make 2020 the best year yet!

1st Grade

Happy New Year! Can you believe it is already 2020?! We hope you enjoyed your holiday break with your family! Thank you so much for a wonderful first semester of school. First grade will be busy this month. We will be doing an author study over Jan Brett and learn about winter animals such as polar bears and penguins. In reading and phonics, we will be learning long vowel sounds, writing different types of sentences, comparing/contrasting, and identifying the main idea, author's purpose and text and graphic features. We will be working hard in math on using various strategies to solve equations and number stories, telling time to the nearest hour, place value with base 10 blocks and coins, and use a variety of ways to make a number with name collection boxes. Our first semester was filled with various phonics strategies to help our students learn how to decode words and begin to read. This semester we will begin reading for meaning and practice fluency. You can help your child with this by working on sight words and reading daily at home. We will be doing Winter Benchmark testing for reading and math again at the end of this month. Thank you so much for your continued support! 2020 is going to be a great year!

2nd Grade

Happy New Year! Its 2020, can you believe it?! The first semester of school flew by, and we are ready to take on this next semester. This month will be full of fun and learning. The first week back we will be learning about arctic animals, and we will do fun science activities, and research. In reading we will be learning about main idea & details, author's purpose, cause/effect, and story structure. In math we will be talking about counting money, open number line practice, fractions and bar graphs. Just a friendly reminder, to send your students to school with a coat, as this is a cold time of year! Keep reading at least 20 minutes a day at home. :) We hope everyone had a great holiday break!

3rd Grade

Happy New Year! We hope everyone had a wonderful, restful break and a happy holiday season! Please continue to work on those multiplication facts each and every night. We will begin multiplying 2 digits by 2 digits and 3 digits by 2 digits as soon as we come back! It is also very important to continue to be reading for at least 20 minutes every night and asking your child questions about what they are reading. Continue checking folders nightly also. Thank you for all your help in this!

4th Grade

Happy New Year! We hope you all had a great time with family and friends! We are excited to start the new year and a new semester! We will have quite a few events that will happen in the second semester. Please keep checking folders for notes and stay connected to your teacher's remind texts. In math we are going to working on techniques for multiplying and dividing. Your child needs to continue to study their facts. They may use reflexmath.com to study or at home timed tests. In Reading, Mrs. Bullard and Mrs. Doran will be starting Unit 3 in their Reading textbook. Please continue to have your child read 20 minutes each night. They should be taking AR tests to practice comprehension skills.Thank you parents for all you do!

P.E., Mrs. Jones & Mrs. Biggs

Music, Mr. Stefanick

We had a fantastic AMP Night with 2nd, 3rd, and 4th grade students in December! Later this spring, we will be having our Pre-K, kindergarten, and 1st grade AMP Night later this spring.

Art, Mrs. Leochner

Happy New Year! We are starting our clay unit this month and students will be making a "snowball" pinchpot! Also, our Art Club starts on January 13!

Media Center, Mrs. Jordan and Mrs. DeVous

I have parents ask me all the time for recommendations on books, movies, and games. Before I purchase anything for Lakehoma Library or for my own family I go to the CommonSense Media web site and read parent reviews. https://www.commonsensemedia.org/

This is a great way to screen the books, movies, and games that your child enjoys. Cold weather brings many opportunities to read. Encourage your child to use SORA or Tumble Books to read a book online.

Happy Reading!

Counselor, Mrs. Bush
