Job Duties

Event planning involves a lot organization and management. It also involves a lot of mathematical duties such as:


Budget Management - keeping track of amount of money spent, and amount of money that you have to spend (also associated with accounting). It also involves percentages, ex. Client might have X dollars, and the highest percentage of the will go toward food/venue.


Estimation - You have to be able to thoroughly guess at realistic prices, percents, and products. You must have a good knowledge and understanding on common expenses, and how to keep that within the budget. You must also be able to correctly round numbers based on the price you have predicted, intending on staying within your client's budget. (ex. Client's budget is $500. You estimate the music expenses to be approximately $147, based off of basic knowledge. The you round that to $150 in order to stay within budget, and also to leave some wiggle room.)


Geometry - A good skill to have is the ability to measure, graph, and calculate certain angles and dimensions of rooms, You are planning an event, you must also decorate the space provided, which usually included being able to properly order decor, or just to fill in empty spaces and hard wall configurations that may take place.


Basic Mathematic Skills - Not only do you have to be able to configure angles, estimate prices, and manage budgets, you also have to be able to quickly do shorthand math in your mind. A skill learned from elementary school, addition, subtraction, multiplication, and division is something that you face in everyday life, In event planning, you are constantly adding on prices, dividing products evenly, or subtracting money from your additional budgets.

Event planning, despite what it may seem, is usually a one-man job. Most event planners are entrepreneurs. There are small companies, like wedding planning shoppes, or corporate companies that do hire event planners temporarily. Some companies are Unison Event Planners LLC, and EPA (Event Planners Association).
