Math
As we continue with our Numbers 0-10 unit, we are working to develop a strong number sense. Students are building the understanding that objects need to be counted one at a time and that each successive object is the number one greater than the previous number stated. We are also trying to develop the ability to identify the next number without having to re-count all the objects. Many students have also utilized the hidden partners to help strengthen their understanding of numbers. A few other concepts that we have developed are subitizing, number writing, and understanding that regardless of configuration the total number remains the same.
Reading
Chrysanthemum, Chrysanthemum, Chrysanthemum! This week we read the book Chrysanthemum by Kevin Henkes. We are working on our listening comprehension through making predictions, retelling, inferring, comparing/contrasting, and forming an opinion. Last week, we read another Kevin Henkes book, Lilly's Purple Plastic Purse. This week, we were able to compare and contrast the characters in both books. We used a Venn Diagram to analyze the similarities and differences between Chrysanthemum and Lilly.
Writing
We have continued our journal writing to build our understanding of sentence structure. We are incorporating sight words into these journal entries. We have also encouraged students to stretch out words phonetically when working on our journals. Our story telling is continuing to develop with the addition of details and ability to write across pages. We are working towards creating a beginning, middle, and end to our story.
Buddies
We started Kindergarten and 6th Grade Learning Buddies today! We interviewed each other to find out some of our favorite things.
Reminders
If you plan to order books from this month's scholastic order (that was sent home last week), please have it in by Friday, October 6th.
Also, your child is bringing home a coupon book from the PTO today. For those of you that aren't familiar with this fundraiser, it's a great opportunity for us to raise money for our school! The books have been sent home to every student and they can keep it and send $25 or send it back. The PTO gets 1/2 of the money from each book sold!
