Slope Intercept Form

The equation of a line

Slope Intercept Form is y = mx + b

The m is the slope. The slope tells us how the line moves.

  • Slope is the constant rate of change between the points on the line.
  • We find slope using rise over run or the slope formula.

The b is the y-intercept, it tells us where the line begins.

  • The y-intercept is a point on the y-axis.
  • The coordinate for the y-intercept is (0,b)

How Slope Can Change Your Graph

Positive Slope

A line with positive slope moves up and to the right.

Negative Slope

A line with negative slope moves down and to the right.

Zero Slope

A line with zero slope is horizontal.

Undefined Slope

A line with undefined slope is vertical.
