Fourth Grade Happenings...
Math: Chapter 8 teaches students how to multiply fractions and mixed numbers by whole numbers. This is something we have been working on in FIM all year as well. We will also review the terms Identity Property of Multiplication, fraction, equation, pattern, and unit fraction.
Social Studies: This week we are beginning to look at the Eastern side of the United States after studying the Midwest Region, landmarks, and people. We talked about our state fish, the brook trout as well.
Michigan Model: The 2017-2018 school year has started a new program for KES, the Michigan Model, which replaced the Second Step lessons. Students learn about social and emotional health in these lessons. We have started talking about using self-control to manage some of our strong feelings.
Writing: We wrapped up our fictional narrative writings and have begun working on poetry. Students are learning some poetry vocab: stanza, connotation, repetition, denotation, rhyme, and rhythm.
Science: Students have been learning about stored energy. They have been building chain reaction machines to construct an explanation of how energy is stored and transferred in chain reactions, such as falling dominoes. In the activity, students are presented with an engineering design challenge to create their own chain reaction machine--a project they are continuing in Mystery 5.
PE-Nut: Mrs. Bauer talked about some of the healthy sayings we hear every day. Students took that knowledge and colored on VG's grocery bags which were taken to the local stores. She will be back with us on March 23rd.
