Conference Night: Sept 8

Parent teacher conferences will be held on Thursday September 8th from 5-7:30pm. Please make sure to arrange time to come chat with your student's teachers and find out how your student is doing so far. This is a great time to learn more about your teachers' styles of teaching and the different academic practices they expect of their students.

International Dot Day: Sept 15

Media Center Specialist Ms. Allbert is excited to sponsor International Dot Day, a global celebration of creativity, courage, and collaboration with DMS students on

Thursday, September 15.

The Dot by Peter H. Reynolds is the story of a caring teacher who dares a doubting student to trust in her own abilities by being brave enough to “make her mark”. Read more about International Dot Day

6th Grade Field Trip to Nature's Classroom: Sept 19-21

6th Graders are looking forward to their trip to Nature's Classroom in September where they will have a great hands on experience exploring natural habitats of our local wildlife and ecosystem. This trip is a long standing tradition for our 6th graders, and it's always a lot of fun. Don't forget to turn in your permission slips and fees by September 12.

Author Visit with Christina Soontornvat: Sept 22

Children's author Christina Soontornvat will do a virtual visit in the media center on Sept 22 where students can talk with her about her award winning 2020 book, A Wish in the Dark. Students who would like to participate in this author visit may stop by the media center during lunch or contact Ms. Suits.

Start with Hello Week: Sept 26-30

Davidsen will participate in Start with Hello Week one week after the official week to accommodate for the 6th grade field trip. We wouldn't want them to miss out! During this week students will have a schedule of extra activities that promote social well-being and an inclusive school culture. Start with Hello Week is sponsored by the Davidsen National Jr. Honor Society. Stay tuned for details on Start with Hello Week.

Reflections is a national arts competition open to students in elementary through high school. Each year the PTSA sponsors and encourages students to create a piece to submit in the Reflections contest and gives an award to the top three entries in each category before they go on to represent our school at the district level. In past years students have had their winning entries win at district level and continue to state level competition representing Hillsborough County. We are very proud of our past winners and encourage all students to explore their creativity by submitting an entry for this year's theme "Show Your Voice!" Students may submit works of visual art, photography, dance choreography, animation/film, music composition, or writing. Entries are due October 24, 2022.

Learn more about Reflections and how to participate by clicking here:

Music fundraiser: World's Finest Chocolate: Sept 13-27

DMS Band, Chorus, and Orchestra students will be selling the favorite "World's Finest" Chocolate Bars starting September 13th through the 27th. Chocolate bars are $1 each, so please send in a few dollars with your student to help support music at Davidsen!

Summer Reading and SLAM

Ms. Suits had fun rewarding students who read from the Summer Reading list with book trivia at lunch this week and is eager to invite more students to join her and Ms. Allbert for SLAM this year. Students can always visit the Media Center during lunch by picking up a media center pass in the cafeteria to find out more!

Study Sync

What's going on in this pic? Well apparently a snake visited Ms Worme's class while they were reading the short story Rikki-Tikki-Tavi, one of the famous tales from the Classic Jungle Book series by English author Rudyard Kipling. Rikki-Tikki-Tavi is a mongoose, and snakes are their natural enemies, but hopefully everything turned out ok. By the way, Language Arts and Reading classes have a new curriculum this year called Study Sync which will offer lessons in both contemporary and classic literature. (Snakes optional).

Students in Ms. Pierce's (formerly Thomas) classes are getting ready to do experiments by doing some easy tests and experiments to get introduced to measuring tools and other scientific instruments.
Ms. Rychel and Mr. Brandli appeared on the DTV morning show to talk about NASA's upcoming Artemis I moon launch from Kennedy Space Center which is (re)scheduled for this Saturday, September 3 at 2:17pm!

You can watch it live here

Artemis 1 Moon Launch Live Stream

Visual Arts

Our two Visual Arts classes taught by Ms. Hall and Ms. Molina are busy creating lots of beautiful work as well as developing visuospatial skills with drawing exercises like drawing images from an upside down point of view.

Davidsen Dance

The Davidsen Dance Department is dancing! For lots of pics and updates, be sure to follow them on Instagram @davidsendance and on Facebook "Davidsen Dance Department".

Ms. Hesson's classes are talking about the history and origins of the Spanish language by looking into the culture and literature of Spain. This is an important and meaningful unit of study as it helps students to understand the reasons behind why we learn Spanish from Spain.

7th and 8th grade AVID students are excited to be part of the school-wide organizational initiative that begins with the school binder that was given to all students at the beginning of this year.

Ms. Wilton hopes all students will benefit from this school-wide effort to streamline work and productivity in students. Here are some highlights of the school-wide AVID Binder:

1. One place for all homework and papers to be signed and returned in the front HOMEWORK pocket.

2. Parents can monitor students work completion in the provided planner pages. Students should be writing in the planner every day for each applicable class.

3. Dividers make it easy to file papers by the correct class.

4. A school-wide bathroom pass is located in the back pocket.

Parents please check your student's work binder daily or as often as possible!

Reserve your copy of the DMS 2023 Yearbook at yearbookordercenter.com using code 21848 You can also purchase a special dedication for your 8th grader at the site. Don't wait until time runs out!

Tuesdays: Reading/Language Arts

Wednesdays: Math

Thursdays: Science
Fridays: Social Studies

Students visit their corresponding teacher for each subject during lunch on these days.

PAPER: Free Virtual Tutoring

Did you know all Davidsen students have access to a free virtual tutor? When logged into Clever, students click on the PAPER app. Paper is integrated with Canvas, so tutors will be able to help them on specific subjects related to their classes, and their teachers will be able to see if students are engaging through the Paper app. Teachers encourage all students to check out Paper to have personal one on one help with a subject, writing assignment, or any topic they might need help with while working at home. This is a great tool and it's free!

Attention 6th graders: Love reading? Why not connect with like-minded students who also love to get lost in a good book? Ms. Allbert is inviting 6th Grade students to join her new

Campus Safety and FortifyFL

Campus safety is a top priority for all students and staff. You can also help keep our school safe and secure by downloading a new app created in 2018 as part of the Marjory Stoneman Douglas High School Public Safety Act. FortifyFL was designed to strengthen school security by giving Florida students and the community the ability to report and instantly relay information anonymously concerning threats or other potentially harmful activities to the appropriate law enforcement agencies and school officials. Download FortifyFL from the App Store or Google Play. https://getFortifyFL.com
Canvas is a required digital platform for all students, and it's also a great tool for supporting your student by allowing you to monitor grades and encourage them to make the effort they need to do well in all of their classes. All students and teachers will use Canvas for grading and communication.

Important school wide announcements are also made on Canvas via the "Dragon's Den" page.

By having the Canvas app on your phone, you can easily check in with your student's teachers and see grades as they are entered by teachers.

Canvas may be accessed by desktop and mobile. The best way to access Canvas from your phone is through the Canvas mobile app. You can download the Canvas Student app and the Canvas Parent app for iphone or Android. Once you have downloaded the app you must connect your account by searching under Hillsborough Public Schools in the search window. For easy desktop access without the app, bookmark the Canvas page in your web browser.

Make sure to communicate with your teacher if you have questions or concerns by using the messaging tool on Canvas. Regularly supervising your student's progress and helping them navigate the platform as necessary can make a big difference in your child's academic success!

Help Davidsen students stay cell phone free

Davidsen is a no cell phone school, and we are taking more steps this year to ensure students are free from the distractions created by cell phone use. Our vibrant school culture benefits when our students are mentally present and paying attention. Focus, participation, and productivity are essential to learning and doing well in school.

We ask parents and guardians to help our efforts by refraining from texting, calling, or otherwise messaging your student's phone during school hours. Any important communication may be made with Ms. Bryant in the front office, who will contact your student's teacher. Students may also contact you as needed by asking their teacher.

Students may bring a cell phone to school but it may only be used when a teacher requires it.

The cell phone rule also applies between classes and during lunch.

The Davidsen administration strongly believes that barring cell phone use in school is beneficial to our students' productivity, attention level, personal development, and more. We thank you for joining us in helping to promote and uphold our student-centered cell phone policy.

School Hours and lunch times

Every Monday students are released one hour early.
