Communicating Across the Internet
How do device communicate
What the internet is ?
The internet a is a type of Wide Area Network that connects to computers on a global scale. The internet uses Internet Protocol ( IP). The internet connects to billions of services and also supports the world wide web. The internet connects round the world through cables. e.g Fibre Optic cables.
An IP ( Internet Protocol address ) is a numerical label assigned to each device in a computer network that communicates using the Internet Protocol. An example of a numerical label is 69. 63. 176. 13 which is for Facebook. The IP has two main function : Network interface identification and location addressing. An IP is also like a set of rules that govern internet activity on the World Wide Web. Every website have an IP address so we can access a site we type in the domain name I.E Facebook.com.
The DNS ( Domain Name System ) is an internet service that translates domain names into IP Addresses. Because domain names are alphabetic, they are easier to remember, unlike the internet that uses the IP address which is numerical and changes quite frequently. Every time you use a domain name, therefore, a DNS service must translate the name into the corresponding IP address. For example, the domain name could be Google.com might translate to 184.108.40.206.
