A Note From Your Principal
Dear HCS Families,
Thank you for your support as we continue into the winter months this school year. Our students and staff continue to shine each day as evident in their conversations, written work and daily interactions. I must give a HUGE thank you to our school librarian, Janelle Deal, and all of our parent and community volunteers for their hard work and dedication in putting together our Fall Book Fair. Students and their families had a wonderful time shopping this year! And a SHOUT OUT to Kristin Kester and our PTA for hosting Family Literacy Night. Families had a joyful time cozying up together with a book. We are truly grateful for these opportunities and appreciate your support in attending our events.
I am super excited to share that our upcoming Elementary Holiday Concert will be held next Tuesday, December 6th at 7pm in the auditorium. Our performance features 3rd, 4th, and 5th Grade Choirs and 5th Grade Band. This is a night you won't want to miss! Looking forward to seeing you there!
Sincerely,
Natalie Pfluke

Volunteering at HCS
Thank you to those who have filled out the volunteer application form. Just a few reminders and guidelines for volunteering and chaperoning:
Student confidentiality must be maintained at all times.
Please arrive at school 5-10 minutes ahead of your appointed time in the classroom.
Please sign in at the Elementary Office to receive a Visitor Badge for identification as a volunteer. You will need to bring your license with you if this is your first time.
If you are not feeling well, or need to cancel for any reason, please notify the teacher as soon as possible.
Chaperones ride the bus both to and from all field trips.
Please limit cell phone use to emergencies only, as we will need your eyes on the children.
This is NYS law - Any medications, including over-the-counter, can be administered by school personnel only.
A reminder that field trips are an extension of the school itself. Tobacco, alcohol, vapes and firearms are prohibited.
If you are chaperoning a field trip, the school will provide the students with what they need. Chaperones are not permitted to purchase food or items for the students they are assigned to.
Classroom teachers will reach out to you individually to share opportunities for volunteering and chaperoning. On behalf of the Elementary School, we look forward to working with you and appreciate your partnership for all students.
Learning and Literacy: Alison Farrell, Literacy Coach
Have you ever found yourself baffled by the terms and abbreviations tossed around in education? Have you walked away from parent-teacher conferences or scanned your child’s report card, still wondering what all these terms really say about your child’s reading and writing progress?
You are not alone! Even the term “literacy” can cause some confusion! Here is a well written glossary of terms related to literacy: reading, writing, speaking, listening.
Literacy Terms Defined for Parents (Printable List of words and definitions)
This Reading Mama (This site has many quality resources for reading and writing).
If you’d like to know more about literacy terms, especially what they say about instruction and your child’s progress, I’d be happy to talk with you.
Happy Reading!
Alison Farrell

Keeping up with reading at home-
November may have been Family Literacy Month, but sharing great reading and writing at home is ongoing! We are asking families to send in pictures of you engaging with your children in reading or writing together. We are also asking for book reviews and book recommendations to add to our January newsletter- and storytelling is literacy too! December is a great time to tell detailed family holiday stories, and share old and new traditions with your children.
