What We Are Learning
Math
Adding & Subtracting Fractions
We are beginning our 3rd math module. In Module 3, students’ understanding of addition and subtraction of fractions extends from earlier work with fraction equivalence and decimals. This module marks a significant shift away from the elementary grades’ centrality of base ten units to the study and use of the full set of fractional units from Grade 5 forward, especially as applied to algebra.

Language Arts
This week in language arts we will begin our next book club. It will be taught whole class. We will be reading Blood on the River. Through this novel study the students will work on reading strategies & comprehension, writing, & social studies skills.
Social Studies
This week we will begin our unit on Colonial America. We will start with Roanoke and continue on through Jamestown & Plymouth. The students will learn why Europeans came to the New World and where different groups of people settled based on their backgrounds and beliefs.
Writing
The class will begin their Informational Writing unit this week. We are shifting from narrative to research based writing. The students will focus on including all aspects of non-fictional text features in their final pieces. We will focus on publishing 2 pieces. So stay tuned for publishing party dates!
