Which comes first, the attitude or the action?

This may seem like a strange way to start a quick thought about Thanksgiving, but it's what I've been considering as we get ready for the holiday. Should we make sure we feel grateful then express it, or should we go ahead and give thanks even if we don't completely feel it?

I think we could all agree that expressing gratitude when we feel it is appropriate, but it may be surprising that the Bible indicates in several places that we should express gratitude even when we are not necessarily feeling it.

through anxiety...

Do not be anxious about anything, but in everything by prayer and supplication with thanksgiving let your requests be made known to God. -Philippians 4:6

in difficult times...

Give thanks in all circumstances; for this is the will of God in Christ Jesus for you. - 1 Thessalonians 5:18

in everything we do...

And whatever you do, in word or deed, do everything in the name of the Lord Jesus, giving thanks to God the Father through him. -Colossians 3:17

I hope you have a wonderful holiday break with your family and that our students and staff return rested and ready to finish the first semester strong.
