CDS Phoenix Rising
Cheongna Dalton High School's Weekly Newsletter

From the Assistant Director
The end of another successful week here at CDS marks the start of Chuseok break. I hope that everyone has a relaxing week off with friends and family! I look forward to seeing you when we return.
This week CDS conducted its student council elections. Students gave speeches (Watch: Secretary & Treasurer and President & Vice President) and debated on Wednesday following a multi-week campaign guided by Ms. Maguire and Mrs. Stant. I was incredibly impressed with and proud of our students public speaking skills. After it was all said and done, the students elected the following students to be the 2019-20 CDS Student Council:
President: Hyun Jun Cho
Vice President: Collin (Yunseo) Park
Secretary: Suhin Shin
Treasurer: Jiah Choi
(Pictured above)
I'm so proud of all students who ran, and I hope that those not elected still choose to serve their community by running as grade representatives in the next round of elections the Friday following the Chuseok holiday.
Although it was a rainy end of the week, students brightened the hallways and classrooms with their smiles. I've had the pleasure to be conduct classroom observations throughout the school, and I've seen a great deal of positive growth. I'm reminded on a daily basis that our student body is passionate, thoughtful, and genuine. What they bring to our community is ultimately what makes this school great!
We ended our week with the seniors in the Phoenix cafe where they took part in our annual Senior Project Pitch Event in which students get feedback on their projects. This event will launch students on their way to successfully completing this important graduating requirement. The event was really successful and a great deal of fun!
Finally, I would like to call attention to our yearly school service trip! This is an incredible opportunity for our students to become global citizens and have important and meaningful life experiences. As many parents and students know our winter break is generally three weeks long. This year our winter break was extended an additional week in hopes of encouraging our parents to take advantage of this opportunity. In previous years, the trip was placed much too close to the AP exams or SAT exams for people to feel comfortable sending their child. We have moved it to this time because we have heard your voices. Please sign up and join us!
For more great information about anything CDS related, please take a look at our brand new high school webpage and make sure to like us on facebook!
All the best,
Jason Musselman

Some examples of student projects this year are: A community job fair, pep rallies, art exhibitions, sleep research, community outreach and teaching children. The school is really looking forward to seeing how students can display their readiness for the next stage in their life.
A huge thank you to Ms. Maguire who organized and planned this incredibly beneficial event for our students.
CDS Cross Country's First Meet!
The first race of the day began with the Girls’ Varsity Race. The members of the CDS girl’s varsity team running this race included Hyunji Kim, Chaeyeon Kim, Linda Hwang, Suhyeon Han, Jenny Kim, Yeonwoo Shim, and Ashley Shimada. What at first started as a simple drizzle became an extended downpour. The girls were running with very low visibility, constantly trying to wipe the rain from getting into their eyes, and running in puddles and bodies of water that came up to their knees. Yet, through all of these hardships and adverse conditions, they were able to pull through and complete the race. Leading the way for the CDS girls was newcomer Chaeyeon Kim with an impressive feat of placing 11th among all the girls varsity runners. Right behind Chaeyeon was 11th grader Hyunji Kim followed by the remaining CDS runners who came within seconds of each other.
After the completion of the Girl’s Varsity Race came time for the Boy’s Varsity Race. The rain had finally taken a breather at the commencement of this race but would later start up again towards the end of the race. Leading the way for the CDS boys was senior Seungwan Kim who put in a strong effort to start out the year. Behind Seungwan was first time cross country runner Hanjoo Kim followed by Alex Kim who both ran respectable races.
The cross country team takes a week off during Chuseok break to recover from the ordeals of the race and look forward to getting back into running form for their next meet at Seoul Foreign School. Go Phoenix!

Updates & General Information
Got Books?!
The CDS Library plans to have a book swap on September 25th! At this event our middle school students will get an opportunity to trade personal books for something new. We are hoping that there are high school students (or parents) our there who have books they loved reading when they were in middle school which they don't need any more.
The only requirements for books are that they should be geared towards 5-8 grade reading/interest level and should be in nice shape (gently used is perfect!).
Help a middle school student find a book they will love! Bring your books to the library any time before the swap!
Also, you may want to mark your calendars for the CDS book fair. The CDS Fall Book Fair has been scheduled for Thursday and Friday, November 7 & 8, 2019! Hope to see you there!
Collective Uniform Order - 9/2 to 9/15
If you are interested in ordering the CDS uniform a collective order will be made HERE from September 2nd to September 15th. Following this, the rate will go back to its regular pricing so make sure you act fast! Also, if you are interested in down jackets, you MUST order them before the 15th of September. They will not be available after that date.
Jackets will be on display in the 2nd floor Phoenix Cafe from September 2nd until the 6th, so stop by to take a look!
Once the order is placed the delivery is expected to be made on the 2nd of October. Thank you again to our fantastic parents for putting this together!
College Counseling Updates!
This past week, four different colleges visited CDS and shared their school information as a part of their recruitment. We welcomed Michigan State University, Miami University Oxford, Les Roches and Ritsumeikan University.
If students would like more information about these schools we encourage them to stop by the CC offices to find out more!
Looking ahead, we would like our parents and students to know that they check out more upcoming events on our new and improved webpage. We will be having many more school visiting us in the near future including a massive group college fair on the 25th of September @2:30pm. If you are interested, please RSVP via the website!
Ms. Han and the college counselors would like you to know that if you have any questions you should reach out via e-mail or book a meeting!
From all of us in CC, have an awesome Chuseok break and we hope to see you soon!
On Vaping & Smoking
New research continues to pour out about the harmful effects of both of these inhalants. The CDC has just issued a warning against vaping as have many other departments of health around the world. One study of mice (linked above) "finds that inhaling the vapor from an e-cigarette - no nicotine needed - raised the odds of dying after exposure to the flu virus."
We strive to help our students lead fulfilling and long healthy lives. If you or someone you know needs help kicking this habit please reach out to locate support from the resources available at the school: Addiction Science In Action, Mr. Musselman or Mr. Choi.
A reminder that smoking of any kind is not tolerated on our campus at any time.
