News from this week
Dear Parents,
The Friends and Family lunch is coming up this Wednesday, February 1st. My class will be having ours from 10:30-11:00 in the cafeteria. This is an exciting treat for the kids and they really enjoy having someone special come eat with them. I hope many of you and other family members will be able to attend.
We have started our Sound unit in Science this week. This is a fairly short unit but it is also a confusing one for the students. I encourage the students to study nightly from their notebooks to make sure they fully understand all of the vocabulary and concepts. Right now, the test is scheduled for Friday, Feb. 3 and the study guide will come home on Monday.
This week the our counselor, Ashley Thomas, came to speak to the students about Child Lures and staying safe. Please see the letter from Ms. Thomas below to see what she talked about.
We are in need of tissue for the classroom. My large pile has dwindled quickly from seasonal allergies and the cold season. I would greatly appreciate any contribution of tissues that you can donate to our classroom!
Typing and reading logs are due on Monday. The links to the typing websites are on my e-class page. I showed students how to access them. Please let me know if you need help.
I hope everyone has a great weekend!
Sabine Stoffle
Other Important Information
Letter from our counselor, Ashley Thomas
Dear Parent,
Your child’s class was presented with the “Child Lures – Think First & Stay Safe” lesson by the counselor today. We want you to be aware since home reinforcement of the program’s invaluable lessons can help ensure your child’s long-term safety. In fourth grade, the following is emphasized:
Primary Concepts:
· You are smart and know how to stay safe. Your brain helps you recognize danger.
· Most people are safe, but some can change and become scary or dangerous.
· Some people use lures or tricks to get kids to trust them. Learning about the tricks help keep you safe.
· It is against the law for anyone to touch you in the “bathing suit zone” or to make you touch theirs.
· Your instincts are like your own warning siren. They tell us something is wrong and help keep us safe.
· A stranger is someone you don’t know. You can’t tell by looking if a stranger is safe or dangerous. Trust your instincts.
· Some dangerous people use threats and weapons to intimidate children into doing as they say. The threats are rarely real and all threats are against the law.
· You are special and unique and should always be treated with respect.
Lures/Tricks Presented:
· The Job Lure: Children should always check with parents before agreeing to do any chore, job or errand – no matter how small. Parents should know everything about a child’s job: who, what, where, when.
· The Ego/Fame Lure: Children must be accompanied by a parent or guardian on all talent pursuits and parents must verify the credentials of talent agents. Suspicious “talent scouts” should be reported to the police.
· The Online Lure: Children should not keep online activities secret from parents and inappropriate or violent online messages should be reported to parents immediately. Children should never give out personal information online; should not send photos or videos of themselves to people they don’t know; and should never go alone to meet an online acquaintance.

News from the Media Center
Reading is My Super Power
This year’s school wide reading program is Reading is My Super Power. The program started on Friday, August 19th. Students will answer super hero related trivia questions in the Media Center each week to hone their research skills. At home each child is expected to read for at least 20 minutes each night and return their reading logs each Friday or Monday (depending on your child’s teacher’s schedule).
Students who turn in their reading logs every week will attend a reading celebration at the end of the school year. In order for a log to be counted for the week it needs to be submitted on time.
To assist with the reading logs please do the following:
1. PLEASE make sure your child’s FIRST and most importantly LAST name are on the log. We have to enter data for almost 1000 students. If even 10% don’t have their full name this omission adds an extra hour to our data entry.
2. PLEASE turn logs in when they are due. Your teacher will tell you the due date.
3. PLEASE add your child’s reading time in MINUTES. To understand why this is important read request #1.
You may also submit your child’s reading log electronically through the Gwin Oaks website. Fill in information with your child’s information (including your child’s teachers and grade from the drop down menu) and click submit. Email your child’s teacher to let him/her know log was submitted electronically to the Media Center. If you have any questions please email Mrs. Amolo at sharon_amolo@gwinnett.k12.ga.us
