Centennial Celebration
In 1917, the Julius Rosenwald Fund was established to help build black schools in the south. There were three requirements for securing aid from the Rosenwald Fund which were a simple deed of two acres of land to the trustees of the district, submission to and approval of the plan by the proper authority, and a completely finished, painted, and furnished house.
In 1918, a Rosenald School was built on two acres of land (our current site) by St. Peters Baptist Church which is adjacent to our school. Funds were provided by the Rosenwald Fund, state, county, and are African-American communities.
2018 marks the 100th year that our site has been committed to social action. To celebrate the unique and significant history of our school we are scheduling a centennial celebration for December 7th.
We have pulled together a committee that will include community members, Deacon Melvin Davis from St. Peters Baptist Church, Richlex graduates, D5's Social Studies Coordinator, D5's Director of Public Information, members from PTO and SIC (school improvement committee). Ideally I would like to have a minimum of two staff members to serve on this committee as well. Trina Poston has agreed to assist. Our first planning meeting will be held Wednesday, July 25th at 3:00 pm. If interested please let me know. Further details to come.
Magnet Schools of America (MSA) Technical Assistance Conference October 3rd-5th
MSA holds an annual Technical Assistance conference. DFES sent a team to attend this conference (Washington, D.C.) during the beginning stages of our magnet program in 2013.
The Technical Assistance conference will be held in Columbia October 3rd-5th with Richland 2 and LexRich 5 serving as host districts. On the morning of Thursday, October 4th MSA will send participants to visit schools in both districts.
Spring Hill High School, The CATE Center, and DFES will host conference attendees. We are told between 30-40 participants.
Please mark your calendar. Further details to come.
