Twin Peaks Middle School
Weekly RAM Newsletter
From the desk of Principal Mills - February 12th, 2023
Happy Sunday Ram Families!
I hope this newsletter finds you all well and gearing up for today's Superbowl, and making your plans for Valentine's Day on Tuesday! Regardless of which team you are rooting for today, or if you care more about the commercials in between the game, I hope you get a chance to spend some time with family and friends enjoying the day! We look forward to students celebrating Valentine's Day on Tuesday, but please remember it is NOT a holiday and is a regular day of school for all students.
We started the week off with a water leak and port-potties being delivered to campus, and even though the porta-potties haven't been picked up yet (they are leaving tomorrow!), I'm happy to report that our PUSD Maintenance & Operations department was able to locate and repair the issue before school ended on Monday, restoring full water service to TPMS. There is obviously still some cleanup work that needs to be completed, so the front entrance area to the school will remain taped off until the repairs are done. The entrance between the science and admin buildings is accessible and open for students and staff to use, but please use caution in and around this space until the work is completed.
I need to ask for some help from parents and guardians driving your students to school in the morning... please remember that our parking lot is an Active Loading Zone during drop-off times. Our parking spaces are for our staff, so please do not park in the parking lot to drop-off your student. Also, please do not sit parked in the drop-off lane; please enter the parking lot, drop-off your student, and then exit the parking lot. Staying parked in the drop-off lane prevents our staff from being able to park and backs up traffic to the stoplight. To avoid the parking lot traffic, I recommend that you drop your student off on Twin Peaks Road and let them walk around the MPR to the front of school.
PUSD is conducting their District wide annual survey to gather your input on our Local Control Accountability Plan, or LCAP, which will help shape the District’s goals and guide our budgeting priorities for the 2023-2024 school year. Parent and student input and feedback is vital in this process! The main question that PUSD is asking is: “What supports do students need to have their most successful school experience in Poway Unified?” (this may include academic, extracurricular, safety, behavioral, social-emotional, environmental, or related to learning options).
Please CLICK HERE to participate in the survey! It should take you 15-20 minutes to complete, depending on how many comments you choose to post and respond to. As we consider our needs here at TPMS, improved and upgraded facilities (classrooms, common spaces, locker rooms, courts and fields) and staffing to support the expansion of elective and support classes are items to consider providing feedback on. THANK YOU in advance for taking the time to complete this survey - the window to participate closes this Friday, February 17th!
Finally this week, our 6th graders are heading off to camp tomorrow morning - Monday, February 13th. Please make sure to check out the information on our TPMS website LINKED HERE if you have any questions or concerns about how to best prepare your student for this year's Camp. Thank you to all of our families that came by campus today to get test verified or to turn in their testing results and get a wristband for their students. All families and students who have not turned in their test verification results yet will need to do so tomorrow morning - please have your student go to their Ram class/teacher and bring in a hard copy of their results to turn-in and exchange for a wristband to board the bus.

National School Counselor Week!
It was hard to know that this was Counselor APPRECIATION week, since our amazing counseling team not only provided our staff with snacks, SODAS, and positive affirmations all week, but also decided to take 52 of our TPMS scholars to Poway High School for a CTE electives preview field trip! Our students had the opportunity visit a variety of CTE classes including Auto Shop, Engineering, the Ag Program, Photography, Theatre, Digital Media Production, and Animation. After this field trip 85% of the students said they would like to take a CTE class in high school!
A huge THANK YOU to Mrs. Baskin, Mrs. Jennings and Mrs. Roman for all of their hard work each and every day, but also for their willingness to go above and beyond to provide a memorable learning experience for our students. TPMS is lucky to have such a wonderful team of counselors!
Parents/Guardians of 8th Grade Students
The Poway High School counselors will meet with our 8th grade students in their Language Arts classes on Monday, February 27th and Tuesday, February 28th to share important information about the transition to high school. The counselors will share the exciting opportunities that await our future Titans, provide information about high school graduation and college entrance requirements, and give students their Course Request Forms (CRFs) to select their classes.
We encourage all families to attend the 8th Grade Family Night on Tuesday, March 14th at 5pm at PHS to learn about clubs, activities, and the wide array of elective and core courses available. Families will also have an opportunity to see the campus and meet some teachers.
Students need to turn in their Course Request Form to their Language Arts teacher by Friday, March 24th and their course requests must be entered online by March 31st. Please encourage your student to keep their course request worksheet as they may not remember their choices in the fall.
Please click HERE for additional course request information and important dates for PHS and other PUSD high schools if your student plans to attend another school in the district.

What I Wish My Parents Knew 3/8/23
San Diego Elite Track Club
San Diego Elite is a member of the USATF (USA Track and Field) association and participates in local, regional and national events. San Diego Elite is “homebased” out of Steel Canyon High School, but has athletes from all over San Diego. Therefore, providing a training location such as Poway is a perfect opportunity to grow and expand the San Diego Elite team. San Diego Elite Track Club has a storied history, although known by other names and affiliated with other clubs in the past, Coach Ranti Harper has been an integral part of the youth track scene in San Diego and looks forward to bringing his enthusiasm and knowledge to Poway.
Trainings will primarily be held at Poway High School; however, trainings may take place at Lake Poway or another location depending on the particular workout. Training schedules will be sent out at least 1 week in advance (we are working on scheduling the entire year, but there are challenges due to high school sports having preference at Poway High School). The goal is to get in 1-3 team workouts per week with at least one of those being on the track. Meets are held on the weekends, generally Saturday, but some meets will run on Saturday and Sunday.
For more information, please feel free to email questions to: jordanbuswell@hotmail.com or call Jordan Buswell at (760) 594-1642, the San Diego Elite representative.
