Attention Sophomores and Juniors
Please plan to attend College and Career Preview Night on Wednesday, March 6, 2019 from 6:30 p.m. to 8:00 p.m. at the Toledo-area campus of Owens Community College to learn about college and career options after graduation.
Over 100 representatives from colleges and universities in Ohio and neighboring states will be there to provide information and answer questions regarding academic programs, scholarships, and campus life. Industry experts from a variety of career fields, such as skilled trades and manufacturing, along with Owens faculty, staff and the military, will also be on-hand to talk about transfer opportunities, service, and in-demand technical careers. Mark your calendars - March 6th, 6:30-8:30 pm!
Oregon Area Teen Job Fair
We are pleased to invite your students to participate in our Oregon Area Teen Job Fair on February 26th from 6:30-8:30 at Clay High School. This event is sponsored by Clay High School and the Oregon Branch Library and is open to all area teens.
We will have 10 local businesses looking to hire your students as well as 2 great volunteer opportunities available for them. One business in particular was eager to engage with Ottawa County students, so we are hopeful that your students can attend.
To help prepare your students, the Oregon Branch Library is offering a job skills boot camp on Saturday Feb. 23 at 10:00. Participation in the boot camp is not mandatory for attendance at the Job Fair, though the boot camp will provide tips and tricks to help your students excel in interviews, resume building and job retention.
We are hoping to build this event to support teens in our community and would greatly appreciate your support in making this Job Fair a success.
Should you or your students have any questions, do not hesitate to ask.
Sincerely,
Kate McGowan

Genoa-Penta Child Development Class Hosts Preschool that is “Out of this World.”
On January 8, 2018, Mrs. Ferrell’s Child Development class hosted an outer-space-themed preschool for eleven children in our community that ranged in age from one-five years old. Students spent two weeks preparing lesson plans and decorating the room to make it kid-friendly as well as a fun and educational experience for the little ones. The classroom ceiling sported a giant solar system and the walls and windows were adorned with painted planets, constellations and even a friendly alien! Some of the lessons they did included edible space slime, creating an outer-space habitat, a planet bucket toss and a moonrock scavenger hunt! High school participants included: Savannah Carroll, Olivia Deverna, Samantha Diebert, Chloe Dipman, Payton Fox, Rylee Fredericksen, Jackson Hadden, Halanna Kwiatkowski, Jason Lipps, Veronica Lopez, Brian Martin, Alexis Mienke, Hannah Otto, Trance Vanliere, Tanner Watson, Sierra Weber, Lexus Wiciak, and Olivia Wiciak. It was a great experience for both little and big kiddos! If you have a child, in the one to five age range, whom you might be interested in attending this once-a-semester event, please contact Brenna Ferrell for more information at bmferrell@genoaschools.com.

Greetings Comet Nation,
Some of you are aware that I have interests outside of school. Yes, I know it's hard to believe I don't spend every waking moment thing about life here at GHS. Aside from working out, relaxing with family and watching football I also enjoy reading.
Books I most enjoy reading are biographies and books about personal finance.
The most recent book which I just finished over our snow days is titled Everyday Millionaires by Chris Hogan.
With all of our talk about college and career readiness here at GHS, we need to begin talking even more about money and how to make money work harder for you instead of you working harder for your money.
Below you'll find some of the statistics from Hogan's research of 10,000 millionaires:
(You'll begin to see posters around school with these statistics)
- 89% of millionaires have a net worth between $1 million to $5 million dollars
- 62% graduated from public state schools
- 9% didn’t graduate from college
- Nearly 50% had a B average or less in school
- 55% give to charities and churches on a regular, monthly basis
- 73% never had a penny of credit card debt
- 18% are self-employed
- 62% earned a household income of less than $100,000 annually
- 80% exercise at least three times a week.
- On average, their homes are 2,600 square feet, and they’ve lived there for an average of 17 years.
- Two-thirds have a paid-off mortgage.
- They paid off their home on average in 11 years.
- Their net worth breaks down as one-third their home, and two-thirds their investments.
- They became millionaires at the average age of 49.
- They spend, on average, $35 on a pair of jeans.
- The top five occupations among millionaires in the U.S. are engineer, accountant, teacher or professor, management, and lawyers.
You can make more money, but you can not make more time.
As always,
Go Comets!
