LIWP 2020 Summer Mini-Institute
July 6-10 via Zoom
This summer, the Long Island Writing Project is revamping our Summer Mini-Institute to be virtual. While we won't be physically together, we will come together (via Zoom) to learn more about teaching, writing, and living. The growth that comes from a Summer Institute cannot be measured. Bringing passionate teachers together who care about students, who want to learn more, who seek to change the injustices that surround us is a powerful way to light a candle in the darkness. We hope you will join us this July 6-10 for mornings of writing, connection, and questioning. We believe that now, more than ever, writing matters. Stories matter. All voices matter. We can help our students to know this by living it ourselves. Join us.
Apply today to be part of the LIWP 2020 Summer Mini-Institute
IMAGINE YOURSELF:
• joining a nationally acclaimed professional learning community that puts the knowledge and voices of teachers at the center;
• discovering the power of your own writing and scholarly inquiry;
• developing the skills and confidence to take your writing instruction into the digital age;
• spending time gathering fresh tools and effective strategies for reading and writing with the Next Generation Learning Standards;

ABOUT THE INSTITUTE:
The Long Island Writing Project (LIWP) Invitational Summer Institute brings together a select group of reflective practitioners in all academic content areas and at all grade levels, kindergarten through college. Supported by the LIWP and each other, these teachers will be immersed in writing, reading, and teacher inquiry, ultimately returning to their classrooms empowered to bring their students to higher levels of performance. In addition, as LIWP teacher leaders, they will have a multitude of opportunities to continue their own professional development. In this way, the summer institute represents the first step in what thousands of writing project teacher-leaders around the country have described as a career-transforming journey.
CREDITS: 15 hours of the Invitational Institute can be used for in-service credits. We encourage pairs and teams of teachers to apply from the same school district. COST: $150. Please see payment options on the Google Form application.

framework explored in his new book, Planning Powerful Instruction (Corwin, 2019).
You’ll finish this session understanding:
● why EMPOWER works with all learners of all ages and in all subject areas and the big ideas this model comes from
● the seven “moves” teachers must make to ensure student engagement, deep learning and transfer (plus the consequences of leaving any of the moves out)
● practical starting points for planning highly motivating, inquiry-based, thematic units in
YOUR context, and for planning lessons that apprentice and transform learners into greater and more expert capacity.
If you want to transform how you plan so you can transform how your students learn, this workshop is for you! We are delighted that Dr. Jeffrey Wilhelm will help us open our 2020 Summer Invitational with such a dynamic workshop.

“You will learn so much about the teaching of writing as you hone the craft. Incredible experience. The collaboration and support were pivotal. It will change the way you think about the teaching of writing. Highly recommend.”
-Lauren Haggerty Healy , Reading Specialist, Garden City Public Schools
As a consultant for the Northern Virginia Writing Project and a firm believer in the tenets of the NWP, I knew when I moved back to Long Island that involving myself in the LIWP would provide me with a network of passionate educators and the LIWP did not fall short! The ISI (Invitational Summer Institute) connected me with like-minded professionals and provided me with the opportunity to expand my professional network, as well as confirm my belief that to be a teacher of writing we must be writers ourselves. The ISI was one of the most rewarding forms of professional development I have ever participated in. Not only did I add to my "teaching toolbox" by sharing best practices for the teaching of writing, but I also connected with educators who I respect immensely, and still collaborate with today, despite currently living in Northern Virginia. You won't find a richer PD experience than the LIWP's Summer Institute!

The Long Island Writing Project
The LIWP comprises teachers from kindergarten through university. Our seminar leaders are outstanding educators from different grade levels and disciplines in local schools, and we have a strong, ongoing partnership with Hofstra University's Department of Literacy Studies. LIWP teacher-consultants keep up with research and changes in education and their work is grounded in practical classroom approaches. Through our model of teachers teaching teachers, participants in the LIWP strengthen the classroom strategies they already find effective in teaching writing and develop new ones.
One of the most important foundational beliefs of our Project is that teachers improve their knowledge of teaching writing by writing themselves. Another is that the best way to improve our own teaching is through sharing what works with other effective teachers. We welcome your inquiries, and look forward to writing, learning and teaching with you.
The Long Island Writing Project at SUNY Nassau Community College is an approved Sponsor of Continuing Teacher and Leader Education (CTLE) pursuant to Section 80-6 of the Regulations of the Commissioner of Education, New York State Education Department (NYSED).
