College can be expensive. In our December newsletter, we'd like to highlight a few things seniors and their families can do right now to find out more about scholarships for students.
Oregon Scholarship Opportunities
OSAC is an organization committed to assisting Oregonians in pursuit of higher education. They have a single application for multiple scholarships for Oregon students. Priority application deadline: February 15 We encourage students to fill out this application as it applies to multiple scholarships for Oregon high school students only.
Oregon Goes to College is a great resource for local scholarship opportunities. Deadline: various
Multnomah Athletic Foundation offers a number of scholarships for student athletes including the Loprinzi Scholarship which offers 30 $1000 scholarships to students in the Portland area and has 3 additional $8000 awards. Deadline: March 1
Scholarship Directories: Identity and Institutional
Seek out scholarships from organizations you know or belong to. Some are one-time only opportunities and others are renewable.
There are many opportunities for students with currently open deadlines for APIA, Pride Foundation, and Science Ambassadors.

School Specific Scholarships
Your college's financial aid office is a great resource for these opportunities.
OSU and U of O both offer scholarships for incoming freshman.
Other Important Notes on Scholarships
- Stay Organized: It can be challenging to keep track of all the different scholarship deadlines and requirements. Check out the scholarship tools including the Scholarship Tracking Worksheet developed by the University of Portland HERE.
- Be Savvy: There are a few important points here. Use your time wisely--spend some time looking for scholarships that are applicable to you and will be worth your effort. Be aware of scams--never pay for a scholarship.
- Use Your Resources: Let your network of friends and family know you are seeking scholarships. Your parent/guardian or grandparent may have a connection to a group or organization that offers scholarships to dependents or descendants.

Financial Aid and Offer Letters
As students receive offer letters from colleges and universities, families will notice great variation in the terms used for various loans and grants. Carefully consider each letter and reach out to the school's financial aid office with questions. Using a tracking tool, such as this Award Letter Analyzer, can help families determine the cost of each of the schools their students are considering.
