A Note from our Principal, Mrs. Walk
Hello Trebein Parents,
Thank you for participating in your child(ren)'s parent-teacher conferences. The relationship between school and home is vital for student success. There are schools across the country that struggle to get parents to come in for conferences. At Trebein, we have 100% participation! This is not only great for kids, but it is a wonderful reflection on our families and the value they place on education.
As we continue our book study of Thrivers by Michele Borba, Ed.D., we will consider the topic of "self-control" this month. The ability to control your attention, emotions, thoughts, actions, and desires is one of the most highly correlated strengths to success and a surprising untapped secret to helping kids bounce back and thrive. It is also a better predictor of academic success than IQ or SAT scores. In fact, self-control influences virtually every area of our children's lives: it's that crucial.
Why is self-control so hard to teach?
* Technology encourages us to multitask...constantly!
* We're pushing our kids too hard, too fast.
* Kids aren't getting enough sleep.
* Kids aren't playing anymore.
Top Five Takeaways:
1. Self-control is like a muscle that gets stronger from regular daily exercise.
2. Taking a slow, deep breath and exhaling twice as long as the inhale helps kids gain control.
3. Odds that a child will adopt a self-control skill are more likely if he practices it over and over.
4. A child's ability to control attention, emotions, thoughts, and actions is one of the most highly correlated strengths of success and resilience.
5. We are living textbooks to our kids. Model self-control so your child catches it.
We enjoy your children and their unique and fun little personalities!

Counselor's Corner
In November, we celebrate World Kindness Day. This is a special day to promote the importance of being kind to one another and fits well with our character education initiative, "better together." We are encouraging students to display acts of kindness to others here at school with this initiative. If you'd like to do the same at home, check out the kindness challenge below!

November is Family Literacy Month!
The National Center for Families Learning (NCFL) worked with Congress to recognize November as Family Literacy Month beginning in 1994. It serves to promote and celebrate literacy among families. Studies have shown a strong correlation between family literacy and educational success. A love of reading starts at home! Here are some suggestions to help nurture a love of reading in your family:
- Read together everyday! Make reading part of your daily routine. Whether itโs at bedtime, while waiting for the bus in the morning, or your child reading to you while you make dinner in the evening, try to carve out a consistent time each day--as little as 15 minutes a day will do!
- Make reading and writing fun and use your imagination! Mrs. Kahlig and Mrs. Longโs classes wrote spooky stories and read them by flashlights. First graders did pumpkin book reports by decorating pumpkins into their favorite characters.
- Play games! Games like Scrabble, Boggle, and Bananagrams help to foster literacy.
- Visit the library! Greene County Library https://greenelibrary.info/
- Start a book club or book swap with your friends and neighbors!
- Create a special reading area in your home! Mrs. Bolton has a great example in her classroom.
