Mar Vista Parent Newsletter
Week of February 1, 2021
Dear Families,
Happy February! This month brings us a celebration of Black History Month, Lincoln and Washington's Birthdays. Don't forget we have two Monday no school days, 2/8 and 2/15 to observe the President's holidays. We look forward to spending lots of time this month learning about our country's history and also moving into Unit 5 in our Benchmark Language Arts Curriculum. This month's curriculum focuses on texts that help us to understand why people use technology and what benefits technology brings to our lives. This is a great time to have family conversations about what role technology plays in your lives, how it has changed over time and to listen to the new ideas students learn from the texts they read. Thank you for being an integral partner in your child's education! Team work makes the dream work!
Please remember that our second School Picture Day will take place on Monday, February 1st for grades 3-6. Siblings in lower grades are welcome to come if they missed last week's date. We ask that families come at the following times to evenly distribute student arrivals and avoid lines. If the time frame doesn't work for you, it is okay to choose another time. Please see the following timeframes and thanks for your help!
Monday, February 1:
3rd grade 12:30-2:00
4th grade 2:00-3:00
5th grade 3:00-4:00
6th grade 4:00-5:00
Photos will be taken outside of the main office with COVID-19 protocols in place. In case of rain, photos will be taken in the library. Please park, wear your masks and wait at the marked areas to be called down for your child's photo. All visitors will be screened for COVID-19 symptoms before approaching the photo area. Do not come to the school if you and/or your child are showing COVID symptoms or have been exposed to someone with COVID within the past two weeks.
Have a great week!

Mr. J's Academic Coordinator Update
Hi Families,
Students will be starting unit 5 in our language arts curriculum, Benchmark, this week.
The science fair looks quite a bit different this year, and due to the structure of distance learning, it is not being required for 4th-6th graders. It is still encouraged for those students wishing to participate, and they can still submit their projects directly to the county fair this year. You can find more information about that here: https://ca-scc.zfairs.com/?f=760d2abd-97bf-4923-871c-a48fb3af0565
Please note, the deadline for registration is March 1st.
We will have science fair boards for anyone that wishes to participate, please just reach out to me and we can set something up.

They purchased Zearn for us and I have to say it has been a HUGE support for my math program. I also appreciate the $400 classroom funds because I have been purchasing chapter book sets for my class. I also really appreciate Ashley continuing on being treasurer with her full time job. -Miss Risa

As a reminder, PVUSD now has two afternoon meal pick up locations to support those families who are not able to access meals during earlier meal pick up times. Please note that families can pick up meals for their children for the seven days of the week on the one pick up day. Also, Second Harvest Food Bank distributes groceries during most weeks during these afternoon meal pick up times.
