Coronavirus Update
Updated: February 29, 2020
We wanted to update you regarding novel coronavirus or COVID-19 in Oregon. We are monitoring the situation closely and are in daily contact with our local public health department. There is now one presumptive case of COVID-19 in Oregon. The person has been identified as a Lake Oswego School District employee who lives in Washington County.
Based on current information, the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention and our local and state public health departments continue to consider that the risk to most Oregonians is low. The Oregon Health Authority has set up a comprehensive webpage that includes statewide tracking of COVID-19.
The Beaverton School District is continuing to take precautions to reduce the spread of COVID-19 and is in the process of stepping up planning and preparation for the potential that COVID-19 could affect our schools. We have no current plans to close or cancel school or classes. You can find updated messaging and resources on our website.
Please be assured that we will provide more information as it becomes available. We are committed to the health and safety of our community.
Coronavirus Information & Resources
March 2-6 is Classified Employee Appreciation Week!
March 2-6, 2020 is Classified School Employee Appreciation Week throughout the state of Oregon, so please take this opportunity to recognize our dedicated support staff working in the Beaverton School District.
The District is fortunate to have nearly 1,900 classified employees working to help create an outstanding learning environment for all students. They are our bus drivers, custodians, instructional assistants, nutrition services personnel, maintenance personnel, secretaries, and other support staff who, without their support, effective instruction and learning would be impossible.
"Every day in the Beaverton School District, our dedicated, devoted and passionate classified staff work tirelessly to make sure the District runs smoothly. These amazing individuals are the dependable infrastructure behind the wonderful work we do supporting students. Our entire classified staff are the heartfelt heros in our District,” states Elaine Buchele and Erica Marson, Human Resources Administrators. “They use their talents to help students discover their own. Whether it's impacting the organization behind the scenes in our departments or working directly with students, we value the contributions of all of our classified staff. Approaching work with a sense of commitment, joy and a shared mission clearly defines the passion displayed by our BSD Classified Staff. We proudly salute our classified staff and we value your MANY contributions to Beaverton School District!”
On a daily basis, one can witness our support staff performing a multitude of duties with dedication and commitment. Thank you, classified staff, for all you do for the Beaverton School District every day!
National School Social Work Week - March 1-7
Please join us in celebrating National School Social Work Week March 1-7, 2020. “Beacon of Hope: School Social Workers – Lighting the Way” is the theme for School Social Work Week 2020.
In their role, School Social Workers are able to light the way, emphasizing the whole child, collaborating with other professionals, linking students and families with needed services, and advocating for their profession.
"I love being a School Social Worker because I feel like we are able to reach families that might not access resources, support and care in other settings. I also appreciate that we are able to work on relationships, communication and growth with all of the people that are present in a student's life: their teachers, families, and community as a whole," says Laura Bond, LCSW, School Social Worker for Merlo Station/UpGrade.
Please take a moment to thank a school social worker this week!
WE Celebrate Read Across America Day!
Today is Read Across America Day! Join us as we celebrate a District of diverse readers with books and authors that represent an array of experiences and cultures.
According to the National Education Association, readers who feel included, recognized, and a part of the world are engaged readers. We hope that you’ll celebrate Read Across America in March and throughout the year. We invite you to:
- Read books with kids and use Read Across America’s resources to daily promote the message there is room in our community for all readers. The world—and books—are filled with many different kinds of people. Getting to know them is interesting, exciting, and fun!
- Use Read Across America to help kids enjoy and relate to what they read by linking books and reading to other experiences in their lives and on the school year calendar.
- Make your community the place where Read Across America is on everyone’s calendar. When people make the time to read with children, children get the message that reading is important. Parents, members of your community, and local celebrities who make time to read, help motivate kids to read and celebrate the diversity in their community and our country.
