Message From Superintendent Dr. Kathy Ludwig
Dear West Linn-Wilsonville Families,
The leaves have turned their vibrant shades, evenings are getting colder, and daylight is shortening; these are the signs of fall making its way into winter. Oregon is so beautiful this time of year.
Thank you to our many parents and volunteers who have helped these past weeks organize fun runs, harvest festivals, and seasonal events that are traditions and special to our students and our school communities. Your energy, creativity, generosity of time and talent, and commitment to our schools is greatly appreciated.
As you know, our School Board and District have placed two measures on the November 5th ballot:
Measure 3-554: Capital Bonds to Increase Safety, Security; Address Overcrowding; Build, Replace Facilities.
If passed, the Bond would provide $206.8 million dollars for capital improvement projects that address:
- Safety& Security for all district schools, including secure entrances at all district schools
- Construct one new primary school on district-owned property in the Frog Pond West development of Wilsonville; 600 new homes will be built in that area
- Construct a new middle school for Athey Creek on district-owned property on Dollar Street in West Linn; this new location enables students to walk or bike to school
- Remodel the current Athey Creek building into an expanded, centrally-located Arts & Technology High School
- Construct a new performing arts center at Wilsonville High School with more seating; the current auditorium would become additional classrooms
- Expand Career Technical Education (CTE) offerings and learning spaces at all three high schools
- Expand the stadium and parking at West Linn High School
- Upgrade& Update Technology throughout the district
- Renovate and repair aging schools
Measure 3-555: Renewal of Five-Year Local Option Levy for Teaching Positions
If passed, the local option renewal would preserve about 80 classroom teachers, counselors, support staff. If this measure does not pass, the district would need to reduce the 2020-2021 budget by about $11 million, or about 80 teaching positions.
Both measures are estimated to maintain current tax rates.
If you would like to learn more, please watch this three-minute video that summarizes both measures. Additional details about these measures can be found on the district website www.wlwvbond.org or www.wlwvlevy.org.
Thank you for sharing your children with us as we move into November, a month that reminds us of the importance of family, friends, and a spirit of gratitude.
Warm regards,
Kathy Ludwig, Superintendent

Safety Spotlight — Oregon Health Authority Issues Public Health Warning to Stop Using All Vaping Products
The Oregon Health Authority has issued a public health warning urging people to immediately stop using all vaping products.
Public health officials have now linked a second Oregon death to the use of vaping products. The Oregon Health Authority urges Oregonians to stop using all vaping products until federal and state officials have determined the cause of serious lung injuries and deaths linked to the use of both cannabis and nicotine products. No vaping products should be considered safe. Until health experts can identify why people who have used these products have become seriously ill, and in some cases died, no vaping product should be used. State health officials will continue to work closely with the federal Centers for Disease Control and Prevention and the Food and Drug Administration to determine the cause of deaths and illnesses in Oregon and across the nation.

New Wood Track, Wilsonville High Softball Lighting Completed With 2014 Bond Funding
Every day, hundreds of West Linn-Wilsonville students, families, and community members enjoy school facilities across the school district. From athletic fields to gymnasiums, sports facilities are particularly popular this time of year. Many of those facilities received exciting upgrades this summer and fall, with the recent completion of a new track at Wood Middle School and new state-of-the-art softball field lighting at Wilsonville High School.
The new lighting at Wilsonville High School was installed this fall and increases equity for the softball program, going alongside the school’s turf field to ensure safe play at all times of the year. A district priority this school year, the new lights were installed in time for the coming softball season.
“We’re very excited about the installation of new lights at our softball field this school year and are incredibly thankful for our generous community,” said Principal Kelly Schmidt. “Our student-athletes work extremely hard throughout the year, and this addition to our school will be a great boost going into another season.”
The new track surface at Wood Middle School, meanwhile, was completed this summer and painted this fall. The new track surface complements the synthetic turf playfield, which was completed last summer. Both the track and field are frequently utilized, providing year-round value for youth sports, students, families, and the entire community. The new surfaces will ensure the athletic facility will be viable for years to come.
“I want to say thank you to our community on behalf of our staff and students,” said Wood Principal Mike Strande. “The new track will be a great addition to our school for years to come.”
Both projects were completed using funds from the 2014 Capital Bond. The West Linn-Wilsonville School District is able to provide students, families, and the entire community with top-flight facilities and athletic fields thanks to the tremendous generosity of the West Linn-Wilsonville community. Thank you for your incredible support! To learn more about projects completed under the 2014 Capital Bond, or to learn about the upcoming 2019 Capital Bond, visit the district website.
