A Message from the Principal
Dear Booker T. Washington Families,
March is Women’s History Month. I want to recognize all of the great mothers, aunts, sisters, grandmothers, and daughters for holding things together. We appreciate all you do! I hope your family is celebrating and honoring you this month and beyond.
I would like to remind you and encourage you as a parent to keep reading with your child for at least 20 minutes a day. This is truly the best thing that you can do for your child as a parent. Not only is there a lot of power in reading as it supports their academic growth; but it also can be a nice quiet time together. Reading aloud with your children supports their development as readers and writers, fosters their love of reading, improves reading skills and abilities, and encourages children to read throughout their lives.
A reminder about Attendance: We only excuse an absence for up to 3 school days after the student returns from an absence. A parent/guardian must send a note to the office with the student. Please contact the school office to discuss any attendance related concerns.
With less than 50 days remaining in the school year, we are on the homestretch and need all of your help to make sure students are coming to school focused and ready to learn. In an effort to increase attendance, we will be raffling off a bike at each grade level for students who have perfect attendance for the month of January, February and March.
Our 2nd drawing will be Friday March 3rd. Perfect attendance means being here before 7:45 and staying all day. Students who are late and have early dismissals will not be included in the drawing. We want to thank the Lexington Alumni chapter of Kappa Alpha Psi for donating bikes to our school.
A reminder about behavior expectations: We are starting to see a slight increase in students not being KIND and respectful to others. Please remind your students about being respectful to their classmates as well as adults. If you know something that needs to be brought to our attention, don’t hesitate to reach out to your child’s teacher or a member of administration. WE Can’t Fix What We Don’t Know!
Thanks again for your support and the opportunity to teach your children!

Dear Families:
As we head into a new month, I wanted to send a quick note letting everyone know that we will not need to use Friday, March 17, as a weather make-up day. Students will have the day off as planned, and staff work schedules will remain unchanged.
Many of our schools marked the first day of “Severe Weather Awareness Week” by participating in this morning’s statewide tornado drill. Opportunities like today are part of our districtwide commitment to prioritizing the safety and security of our students, employees, and campus visitors. By practicing emergency protocols, students and staff will be better prepared to respond in the unlikely event of a real emergency.
The timing could not be better given the possibility of severe weather in Fayette County beginning Thursday night and continuing into Friday. Forecasts call for heavy rain, isolated thunderstorms, and very strong winds. Our schools are equipped with weather radios and our leaders will be monitoring conditions accordingly.
We all play a role in keeping our campuses safe places to learn and work. I hope you’ll take a moment to review the attached one-page document outlining FCPS Safety and Emergency Procedures.
Let me know what I can do for you. -DL
