Final Exam Week (December 18-December 21)
Help support the new AMMS Virtual Reality Lab by donating USED iPhones!
Imagine exploring the Eiffel Tower right from your very own desk in French class or experience walking on the moon in your science class. Virtual Reality allows students to explore far off places without ever leaving the classroom.
AMMS Instructional Technology is working to build a Virtual Reality Lab to provide these experiences for all Autrey Mill students. Through your donations, you will be providing our students at AMMS with cutting edge opportunities and preparing our students for the jobs of tomorrow.
The request for Apple iPhone(s) will allow us to build the virtual lab and overcome compatibility restraints. Requesting USED iPhone 6, 6Plus, 6s, 6s Plus, 7, or 7Plus. Apple iOS devices are able to seamlessly work with our system at Autrey MIll. Selecting iPhones offers an optimal experience for students to hone in on the virtual experience through the use of goggles that cannot be accomplished with iPads or laptop devices.
Check out the following website for more information!
Donations may be turned in to the school front office or to Mrs. Andrea Tseng-Rioux in the media center.

Class Updates
Social Studies
In the next two weeks we will be wrapping up our unit on Canada, as well as the 1st semester (how time flies)! On Monday, students will learn about the Quebecois, the independence movement in Quebec. This will be the last new material before the end of the semester. The next three days, students will have time in class to work on their Canada projects, which are due on that Friday, 12/15. On Friday during class, we will be reviewing for the students’ Canada test which will be the following week.
The final week before break, students will be taking their Canada test and sharing their Canada projects. Study guides for the test were distributed and posted in Google Classroom on Thursday. Due to finals scheduling (to allow time for 7th and 8th graders to take more comprehensive finals), 1st and 4th period classes will take their tests on Monday, 12/18; 3rd period classes will take their tests on Tuesday, 12/19; and 2nd and 5th period classes will take their tests on Wednesday, 12/20.
Also, due to finals scheduling, the final help sessions of the semester will be held the week of 12/11 – they will be Monday, 12/11 from 4:05-4:35 and Thursday, 12/14 from 8:00-8:30. These times can be used to help prepare for the test and/or for students to work on their projects.
Thanks so much for a great first semester! We are looking forward to studying Latin America and Australia with students next semester!
ELA
We are spending the next two weeks wrapping up the first half of our informational text unit! Students will be focusing on: using graphic organizers to trace the development of ideas, recognizing an author’s informal or formal style in a text, and using the context of a sentence or passage to determine a difficult word’s meaning. Students have also been learning "close reading" techniques and questioning as they read.
Our test for Unit 3A will be the last week prior to break – day of test will vary depending on final exam schedule. Although we refer to this week as “exam week,” in 6th grade, this last test of the semester will only cover material from Unit 3A (NOT cumulative) and is not weighted any differently than a typical major assessment grade. The test will be a majority multiple choice, with a constructed response portion in which students write a written response. The written portion will take place prior to the multiple choice section to give teachers enough time to properly grade before semester 1 grades are due. Please contact your individual child’s ELA teacher for more specific information, if needed!
Spanish
!Saludos a todos! Students are reading and listening to audio of the novel “Las aventuras de Isabela”. Research in language acquisition tells us that 46% of proficiency comes from listening comprehension. To make the audio comprehensible, we use Quizlet. We also translate and act out the novel in class. We are trying to make a lasting impression of this story as part of the Spanish language foundation in your student´s brain. We need your help to do this!
Please monitor your student for daily practice at home. They should spend 15 minutes each day in two activities: 1) practicing listening, saying and writing the words in Quizlet and 2) listening to audio of chapters previously read in class. We will continue reading this novel after the Winter break. Happy Holidays!
French:
Bonjour parents,
Please refer to Madame Blackburn’s emails and Google Classroom for the most up-to-date information.
Mathematics:
60:
Unit 3 is well underway. The students have covered identifying and using exponents, solving problems using the order of operations, and substituting numbers in for a given variable to solve an equation. After this, we learned to identify the properties of math: associative, distributive, commutative, zero, and identity properties. Ask your child what tricks they use to remember the difference between these. Some of them are amusing! Next, the students will be identifying the difference between an expression and an equation, identifying the parts of an expression: terms, coefficient, variable, like terms, constants, as well as learning to combine like terms. Finally, our 6th graders will practice using the distributive property and also factoring out an expression using the greatest common factor. Look out for the study guide for Unit 3. Our final test of the semester which will cover standards 6.EE.A.1, 6.EE.A.2 (a,b,c), 6.EE.A.3, 6.EE.A.4, 6.EE.A.5, 6.EE.A.6, 6.EE.A.7, 6.EE.A.8 will be our final exam over Unit 3 December 18th, 19th, or 20th depending on your child’s math period.
6A:
We are finishing solving and graphing one-step and two-step inequalities. (MCC.7.EE.4b) This will wrap up all the new material for Unit 3, Part 2, on Expressions and Inequalities. We will spend much of the week before exams reviewing for the midterm. A study guide was sent home for the midterm on 12/6 which is due on 12/13. The midterm will cover the standards for Unit 3, Part 2 which includes solving one-step, two-step, and multi-step equations and real-life word problems with these equations. Students will need to be able to solve equations with variables on both sides with one solution, infinitely many solutions, or no solution. Student should be able to solve one and two-step inequalities, graph them on a number line, and solve word problems with inequalities. (MCC.8.EE.7, MCC.7.EE.1, MCC.7.EE.2, MCC.7.EE.3, MCC.7.EE.4). The exam will be during the week 12/18-12/22. Please refer to the midterm schedule for the specific date for your student’s particular period exam.

Science:
Science will be finishing up the semester looking at layers of the atmosphere. This will conclude our water unit on water distribution, oceans, ocean floor topography, and the water cycle. The test will be taken during the last four days of the semester and will only cover the current unit.
On Friday, December 8th students received their review sheet for their 3.1 Hydrology Unit Test that will be given during the last four days of the semester. The review sheet is due on Friday, December 15th so that students may correct any answers before their test date.
Students should be studying their ISN (science composition notebook), assignments submitted through google classroom, and the resources page in the “About” section in google classroom. Additionally, chapters 11, 13 (sections 1 & 2), and 15 (section 1) in the textbook also cover what will be on the test.
