Black and Latino Achievers Club-Saturday, 11/5 at 10:30a at the Blake Annex


Please join us for an opportunity to learn more about the Capital District YMCA's Black and Latino Achievers club (see attached flyer) that will be held at the Blake Annex, 1 Steuben Place off of No. Pearl Street in Albany. Citizenship Preparation:


The attached flyers are for anyone interested in seeking naturalized Citizenship in the United States. We are proud to offer these through the Office for New Americans Opportunity Center. Please note the unique opportunity tonight (Monday, Oct 24th) to ask questions pertaining to the citizenship process. Just join the zoom meeting at the link provided.

The Citizenship Preparation classes require pre-registration and are for individuals with, at minimum, an advanced beginner level of English and at least 4.5 years residence in the U.S.

Title: Equitable Family Engagement for Multilingual Learners led by Dr. Gliset Colon



Description: The Equitable Family Engagement for Multilingual Learners series is for teachers, parent-coordinators, administrators, and other education related stakeholders. This learning series will consist of a combination of in-person and virtual workshops and is informed by the most current evidence-based research on parent and family engagement and delivery of services to multilingual students and their families. Participants who attend the “Equitable Family Engagement for Multilingual Families” series will be able to assess the effectiveness of their own family engagement efforts and learn about equitable family engagement practices.



Three half-day in person sessions:


a. November 7, 2022 (9am-12pm) Reframing family engagement for multilingual learners

b. February 6, 2023 (9am-12pm) Family engagement strategies

c. June 7, 2023 (9am-12pm) Sharing of educator artifacts; Reflections; Planning for the future

Bilingual Special Education Series led by (Dr.Tamara Alsace and Dr.Gliset Colon)


Description: This professional development series focuses on the areas of effective programmatic, instructional and assessment practices in bilingual special education. This learning series will be applicable for classroom teachers and related services personnel as well as administrators and other school/district leaders and is based on a developmental model to support and sustain school leaders and classroom teachers through a combination of in-person and virtual workshops. This learning series is informed by the most current evidence-based research on the continuum of services for English language learners/Multilingual learners (ELLs/MLLs) with disabilities.


The series will consist of three in-person half-day sessions:


The sessions will focus on preparing classroom teachers to implement the strategies discussed in the text and school leaders to lead the work and follow up on implementation of the strategies and practices presented to teachers. Each session will be held from 9:00am-12:30pm at Questar III BOCES.

• ½ day in person session (3.5 hours) December 12, 2022.

o Issues and trends in bilingual special education,

o Access to quality dual language/ENL education,

o CLRT in bi/multilingual inclusive settings


• ½ day in person session (3.5 hours) March 6, 2023.

o Culturally responsive assessment,

o MTSS,

o IEP planning


• ½ day in person session (3.5 hours) June 6, 2023.

o Specially designed instruction for multilingual learners

o Writing development,

o Transition planning,

o Social-emotional learning

Title: Managing Our Implicit Bias: Supporting School Communities


Description: This virtual workshop will focus on developing a common language to inform discussion and work on diversity, equity, and inclusion, understanding where implicit bias comes from and how it is connected to larger structural issues of inequality, connecting the learning and unlearning of implicit bias to enhancing the support for English Language Learners, and learning intergroup dialogue techniques and how to develop the techniques in the workplace.

Building Skills for a Culture of Accountability: Facilitating Dialogues on Race and Racism


Description: This virtual workshop will focus on developing a common diversity, equity, and inclusion (DEI) and racial justice language, identifying the five focus areas of empathy, awareness, vulnerability, navigating conflict, and thinking and acting outside of own lens, developing a theoretical and practical approach to using dialogue as a technique to apply racial justice practices, building knowledge, capacity, and skills on the connection between racism and inequities experienced by English Language Learners, and acquiring and practice skills navigating DEI and racial justice conflict through dialogue.

The Problem with Math is English - Book Study

Join us while we investigate the book The Problem with Math is English. This book illustrates how students often understand fundamental mathematical concepts at a superficial level. It offers a new way to approach teaching math content in a way that will improve how all students, and especially English language learners, understand math. We will investigate the conceptual understanding in mathematics including simple yet deep definitions of key terms, connections among key topics, and insightful interpretation.


This book study will consist of four Zoom meetings on 1/19, 2/16, 3/16 and 4/27 from 3:00-4:00 in addition to 12 asynchronous learning hours using Google Docs to answer questions based on the readings.


Participants who register before December 21 will receive a copy of the book.
